Special to The New York Times WASHINGTON, April 5 -- President Johnson ordered 4,000 regular Army and National Guard troops into the nation's capital tonight to try to end riotous looting, burglarizing and burning by roving bands of Negro youths. The arson and looting began yesterday after the murder of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in Memphis. The White House announced at 5 P.M. that because the President had determined that ``a condition of domestic violence and disorder'' existed, he had issued a proclamation and an Executive order mobilizing combat-equipped troops in Washington. Some of the troops were...

Like most white, middle-class Americans, I was astounded, shocked and disgusted by the comments and beliefs of Reverend Wright, and, given the applause and cheers, he mirrored the beliefs of most in his congregation. I thought, “well, maybe the people in this church hate America this much, but this has to be a tiny sample of what black people think”. Then, for weeks afterward, I watched black talking head after black talking head appear on various cable news channels – some disagreeing with the Obamas and Wright, but many agreeing with them – that America is a terrible country, for...

WELLESLEY, Mass. — Senator Clinton is describing her opposition to the war in Iraq as an extension of Eugene McCarthy's position in the 1960s movement against the war in Vietnam. Mrs. Clinton's comments came at an energy-charged rally yesterday at her alma mater, Wellesley College. Her visit, the ostensible purpose of which was to announce a new Web site aimed at younger voters, hillblazers.com, created palpable excitement on campus. Hundreds of students lined up amid Wellesley's autumnal splendor for a chance to hear the speech of the 1969 graduate and then moved and bopped to the strands of Smash Mouth's...

I'm not old enough to remember, though I was alive when it was said, but Bob Dole's quip about "Democrat Wars" during a debate in the '76 election campaign has gone down in the history of politics as a revealing moment of ignominy (rightly so - it was a crass and stupid remark). So what to make of Kerry's repeated references to the Vietnam War as "Nixon's Vietnam War", repeated again in tonight's Democratic debate in Wisconsin? Obviously, not so much. Different strokes for different folks, I guess. Depending on political affiliation. Kerry also described anti-Communist efforts in the '80s...

The other day I was look at a book of Presidential biographies with my son. I saw a photograph of President Johnson wearing the lapel device for the silver star. My understanding is that President Johnson was a congressman during WWII and took some desk job just to wear a uniform.
