..... Holloway's child, who was unhurt in the incident, is in protective custody, Lombardo said. The sheriff said investigators were trying to piece together Holloway's background. In the spring of 2012 Holloway received an award from a career-mentoring nonprofit in Portland for being a role model for high school students, according to The Skanner, a community website and newspaper published in the Pacific Northwest. The story recounts Holloway describing her mother as having "turned to alcohol, leaving Lakeisha to fend for herself." Holloway was homeless during her freshman year in high school, according to the newspaper, but had since graduated....

Public shootings have become a familiar American spectacle in recent years, and two more occurred in recent weeks. The details are still unfolding, but so far these episodes seem to fit the general pattern. At Los Angeles International Airport, a young man entered a public area and started firing. Three days later, in the midst of intense media coverage of the first event, another young man did the same at a shopping mall in suburban New Jersey. One penned a note beforehand about his actions, the other a manifesto. Only the L.A. shooter appears to have meant to kill others,...

Ho-hum, a mob of 200 teenagers rampages through the downtown of an American city, assaulting and hospitalizing people and robbing stores. The mayor calls for calm. And nobody outside that local media market, where it cannot be ignored, hears a thing about it. Now why would that be? Could it possibly be because surveillance video from a convenience store that was robbed shows all the miscreants were black? The Right Scoop brings us news of the insurrection which gripped Louisville over the weekend:

That a former University of Central Florida student still living on campus did not carry out a wider plan to shoot others in his dormitory and instead turned his gun on himself was a mere matter of luck for his potential victims, the Orlando Sentinel is reporting this morning. “James Oliver Seevakumaran, 30, was found in his dorm room in Tower 1, a seven-story structure near the UCF Arena,” the story reports. “He died from a single shot to the head fired by one of his newly purchased guns, police said.” He had a handgun, what police call an “assault...

The 500-kilogram animal, named Pépette, was part of a Christmas market attraction, along with his mate Cléopatre. After a hectic day of rides and a stint in the petting zoo, Pépette was spooked by a number of fans who crowded its...

In addition, the squirrel apparently stepped on the television remote on the counter turning on the TV. “The...

The guards reportedly fired in the air to ward off the attackers and police forces used stun grenades against the rioters.
