In a large-scale analysis, researchers at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, Cyprus University of Technology and University College London reveal fringe communities within Reddit and 4chan push the use of URLs from archive services to avoid censorship and undercut advertising revenue of new sources with contrasting ideologies. "Web archiving services play an increasingly important role in today's information ecosystem by preserving online content," said Jeremy Blackburn, Ph.D., assistant professor of computer science in the UAB College of Arts and Sciences. "News and social media posts have been found to be the most common types of content archived. URLs of...

As artificial intelligence is rapidly gaining ground, MIT researchers have created what they call "the world's first psychopath AI," giving it darker views on things by feeding it gruesome content from Reddit. Aptly named "Norman," like the character from Alfred Hitchcock's famous Psycho, the psychopath AI went on a diet of gruesome and violent content from a Reddit page known for its dark posts. As a result, Norman got a whole different view of everything compared to a regular AI that learned from other sources. The researchers note that Norman is a case study aiming to see how AI could...

The social news discussion platform ranked among the most visited websites in the world announced a content policy Wednesday that left many popular gun boards banned. The San Francisco-based site, which is structured around user-created boards termed “subreddits,” updated their community guidelines to bar the use of Reddit “to solicit or facilitate any transaction or gift” that involves a host of items ranging from firearms to drugs, sex work, and stolen goods. “Reddit is not intended to be used as a marketplace and takes no responsibility for any transactions individual users might decide to undertake in spite of this,” said...

A mysterious social media user claims to be behind the bombings that have terrorized Texas in recent weeks, vowing that he won't stop until he becomes "as prolific as the Zodiac Killer."

Deep State is playing offense now and has moved into its next phase of action. The most prominent Reddit board fighting Deep State, CBTS_Stream, which had been building rapidly in readers, was just shut down. The page says: This community has been banned This subreddit was banned due to a violation of our content policy, specifically, the prohibition of content that encourages or incites violence and the posting of personal and confidential information. Banned 13 minutes ago. This is totally bogus. There is no content on the page that “incited violence.” Evidently, Deep State is calling the shots on Reddit...

Reddit has become the latest social-media platform to admit that Russian propaganda was used on its site during the 2016 US presidential election. It follows leaks from news site The Daily Beast showing a Russian troll farm active on the website. Co-founder Steve Huffman said that it had removed "a few hundred accounts" suspected of being of Russian origin. In a blogpost, he said "indirect propaganda", which was more complex to spot and stop, was the biggest issue. "For example, the Twitter account @TEN_GOP is now known to be run by a Russian agent. Its tweets were amplified by thousands...

Germany is set to start enforcing a law that demands social media sites move quickly to remove hate speech, fake news and illegal material. Sites that do not remove “obviously illegal” posts could face fines of up to €50 million (£44.3 million; $60 million). The law gives the networks 24 hours to act after they have been told about lawbreaking material. Social networks and media sites with more than two million members will fall under the law’s provisions. Facebook, Twitter and YouTube will be the law’s main focus, but it is also likely to be applied to Reddit, Tumblr and...

Supporters of President Trump have compiled a list containing personal information on thousands of people they believe are either opposed to Trump or associated with left-wing "antifascist" or "antifa" groups. The list, reported by BuzzFeed, has been circulated and added to on the internet since at least April. The list, which began on 4Chan’s controversial /Pol/ board as a loose collection of names, phone numbers, addresses and social media accounts of Trump critics, has since grown into an organized document spread across the internet. The list has also been posted on text repository site Pastebin. Several versions of the list...

Pepe the Frog’s creator, Matt Furie, is taking aggressive action to defend his intellectual property. The popular caricature — a green frog— was a popular meme on the Internet before becoming a figure endorsed by millennial Trump supporters during the 2016 U.S. election. Due to its popularity among the right, Hillary Clinton’s campaign condemned the character as a “white supremacist” symbol. It was a claim backed by the Anti-Defamation League and countless liberal publications. Disheartened by his character’s newfound infamy, Furie “killed” Pepe by giving it a funeral, only to resurrect it months later in a Kickstarter project for a...

After Charlottesville and the murder of Heather Heyer, hitherto Nazi-friendly internet companies have found their boots and their banhammers. The angry right has for some time anticipated this eventuality, and colonized or established replicas of key services and platforms. 8chan, Voat and Gab are the most well-known examples, respectively resembling 4chan, Reddit and Twitter. Adi Robertson writes that the internet's plumbing, the world of domain name registrars and load mitigation, will be harder to replicate. Why the alt-right can’t build an alt-internet. Even if such a registrar could ignore bad PR, activists could still lodge complaints with the registries, which...

Unlike some, at least we don’t use witchcraft to get our point across! In years past, the alt-Left has resorted to using spells, pointy hats and rituals as a protest tactic. On Saturday, July 22 at noon, a group of ordinary Americans will be flocking to Atlanta. With our placards, megaphones and passion for the truth, we’ll gather in front of CNN World Headquarters. We’ll promise to leave the eye-of-newt and toe-of-frog at home, however! StopTheScalpings and The Media Equality Project are joining with Mainstreet Patriots by hitting CNN in “their house”. Why are we taking this extraordinary step? Simply...

If you're going to create nasty memes to get attention, demand people give you credit for those memes and celebrate when the president of the United States shares one with his roughly 33 million followers, I have no sympathy for you. You're not a martyr for the cause of free expression. There was a time when anonymity allowed Americans with unpopular or unconventional beliefs to make their arguments without fear of retribution. Today, the internet has created an environment that incentivizes people to create detestable messages meant to troll and harass. Then again, this story isn't really about online harassment...

The president of the United States of America is a “sh*tposter.” It’s not an elegant turn of phrase. But it is, I think, the correct terminology to capture a political moment so monstrously stupid that even Jerry Springer finds it embarrassing. To sh*tpost, according to the scholarly journal Urban Dictionary, is to “make utterly worthless and inane posts on an internet message board,” particularly those involving memes or low-quality visuals. And the president’s latest act of sh*tposting—tweeting out a video edited to show Trump wrestling, and beating up, the CNN logo—has flung the 24-hour news network into a week-long controversy...

Members of online forum boards dedicated to President Donald Trump and far-right ideologies have called for the “next meme war,” this time against CNN. The call to arms is retaliation for allegations that the cable network blackmailed a Reddit user into publicly apologizing for creating a pro-Trump GIF that depicted Trump tackling a man who had a CNN logo superimposed on his face, and removing his hateful posts on these message boards. This declaration of a meme war is the latest example of these online community members banding together in highly organized troupes to create and distribute memes attacking their...

"The cases of misreported or erroneously reported major news stories begin to make you wonder, "Are the news media just out there to get Trump," says W. Joseph Campbell, communications professor at American University and the author of Getting It Wrong: Ten of the Greatest Misreported Stories in American Journalism. "The relationship with the president is very tense and is very strained and very stretched, and probably more stretched than strained than it has been in the recent past." Campbell also runs Media Myth Alert, a blog that tracks the recycling of fake news stories in the mainstream media. In...

CNN political analyst Kirsten Powers is hitting back at critics of her network's decision to warn an anonymous Reddit user he could be exposed if he resorted to "ugly behavior" on the internet again. "People do not have a right to stay anonymous so they can spew their racist, misogynist, homophobic garbage," she argued in a series of tweets to her nearly 250,000 followers on Thursday.....
