Who owns the concept of Sola Scriptura and what does it take to be an adherent? What active Christian; be they Catholic Protestant, or Evangelical would argue with the definition put forth by Dr. W. Robert Godfrey, a leading Protestant theologian and President of Westminster Theological Seminary in Escondido, California, in his article “What Do We Mean by Sola Scriptura?”: “The Protestant position, and my position, is that all things necessary for salvation and concerning faith and life are taught in the Bible clearly enough for the ordinary believer to find it there and understand.” Yet a more literalist definition...

An alarming trend is developing in the Free Republic Religion Forum in which a caucus identifier is being claimed for non-existent or impossibly defined groups. With the caucuses being self defined we see nonsense like the Sola Scriptura Caucus. Of course it doesn’t mean all Scripture, only the thread initiators or Forum Moderators definition of Scripture. Jews who believe in the Scripture of the Old Testament are excluded. Mormons, Seventh Day Adventists, and Jehovah’s Witnesses are excluded even though they believe in the sufficiency of their own versions of Scripture. The not so transparent purpose of these faux caucuses is...

SPECIAL: Ten questions regarding the denial of the Eucharist.by Barbara Kralis By Barbara Kralis © 2004 Catholic OnlineSeveral U.S. bishops have recently voiced their opposition and ersatz reasoning why no one should be denied the Eucharist according to Code of Canon Law n. 915.Those in the pews are perplexed.  Which bishop is correct?  Why would some bishops teach that the laws are binding and other bishops teach that they are not?  [i]Quizzically, people are asking ten questions:1] “Why should the Church deny the Eucharist to hundreds of ‘Catholic’ pro abortion politicians?”Answer:  The Catholic Church condemns abortion,[ii] euthanasia,[iii] sodomy,[iv] cloning,[v]...

Why I Deny Religion, How Silly and Fantastic It Is, and Why I'm a Dedicated and Vociferous Bright. This week's page will be devoted entirely to religion. I've reached the point where I just have to unload on this subject that until now I've felt was just outside of the matters that the JREF handles. Since religion shows up as a part of so many arguments in support of other fantastic claims, I want to show you that its embrace is of the same nature as acceptance of astrology, ESP, prophecy, dowsing, and the other myriad of strange beliefs...
