Dear Freepers Basil, suffered a stroke in early January. It left her paralyzed on her right side and unable to speak. She's got very limited speech and her mental faculties are diminished. She spent many weeks in a therapeutic hospital but when it became apparent that her condition wouldn't improve, our family decided she'd be much happier at home. Hopefully we can minimize her suffering and keep her comfortable. Please pray for her, and Mr. Basil who is an amazing care giver and hasn't left her side.

Many FReepers who frequent the Canteen threads might know MeekMom (known to many as Kristin). MeekMom passed away on July 15, 2016, at the age of 50. She also leaves behind countless friends she made over the years online. But she spoke often of...

n goods. When Jerry Denton died the other day, at age 89, the obituaries led with graphic accounts of how he defied his North Vietnamese captors in a TV interview intended as anti-U.S. propaganda. He blinked his eyes: each blink a Morse Code signal. The message: "T-O-R-T-U-R-E." The enemies were torturing their American prisoners. The world needed to know. Denton reckoned correctly the price for spilling the beans so publicly: torture, beatings, more of the same. In his postwar memoir of captivity, "When Hell Was in Session," Jerry Denton described one Vietnamese technique of persuasion. He would sit on a...

Margaret Thatcher’s spectacular ceremonial funeral cost the taxpayer just £1.2 million ($1.8 million), just a fraction of the sum claimed by left-wing opponents. The final bill for the ceremony at St Paul’s Cathedral was revealed by ministers today in a rebuff to critics who suggested the costs would top £10 million ($15.4 million). Officials said that detailed work on the price of security, policing, staff overtime and hiring the Cathedral meant the total was much lower than early estimates suggested. …

She had just turned 35 and I was a few weeks shy of 40 but neither of us had been married before. We shared religious and political worldviews but...

I just received the very sad news that Michigan freeper Westlander has lost his battle with cancer. Joe died on March 4. I cannot express well enough how much I will miss Joe. His loss will be felt throughout the whole forum, and especially by those of us here in Michigan who have come to know him so well the last six years. The mitten board will not be the same without him. My thoughts and prayers are with Joe's wife, Pat, and his friends and family. May God bring them comfort in their time of need. Godspeed, Joe.
