A bird native to Arizona and other western states could be listed as a threatened species by the federal government. The Yellow-billed Cuckoo lives along the Verde, Colorado and San Pedro Rivers in Arizona. It also can be found at the Gila River and Rio Grande in New Mexico and the Sacramento and Kern Rivers in California. Federal officials said the bird’s habitat is shrinking because of dams and other construction projects on the rivers, plus cattle grazing.

Catching a 300-pound killer shark is supposed to be a once-in-a-lifetime event. But nearly three years after commercial fisherman John “Willy” Dean hauled in the first bull shark recorded in the Potomac in 37 years, he repeated the feat Tuesday — twice. The first of the two bull sharks Dean caught Tuesday in the waters off of Point Lookout State Park at the tip of St. Mary’s County was already dead in the water. Sharks need a constant flow of moving water to breathe, Dean’s son Greg said. Constrained in a net that the Deans use to take in fish...

If the world’s largest navigable river system goes dry, the economic consequences will be felt around the world. What is the single greatest reason America is so wealthy? According to the analysts at Stratfor, it is because of a river. They have to be joking, right? What about America’s vast gold resources? What about its mountains of coal? America is the world’s third-largest oil producer—surely that is why. Then there is America’s temperate climate and fertile soils that traditionally make it the world’s breadbasket. And don’t forget America’s human capital, Yankee ingenuity, and Protestant work ethic. Surely these factors are...

President Barack Obama has virtually every celebrity in his corner - including the nation's surrogate grandmother, Betty White. But the tireless Joan Rivers, out promoting her latest book, didn't sign on for Obama's soak the rich policy solutions.} Rivers, following the path blazed by fellow comic Jon Lovitz, isn't too keen on the government taking more of her hard-earned cash.

San Diego Chargers quarterback — and Alabama native — Philip Rivers announced Thursday that he would endorse Rick Santorum in the state's presidential primary, praising the former Pennsylvania senator's record on social issues. "I am supporting Rick Santorum for President because of his stance on issues that attack vital Christian values our country was founded upon: no abortion, upholding traditional marriage, defending religious freedom, no euthanasia," Rivers said in a statement. The quarterback went on to pledge to help Santorum as he campaigns through the Deep South.

Comedienne Joan Rivers ditched a gag about Michelle Obama from her routine - because she feared she'd be accused of racism. The comedy legend wrote a joke about US President Barack Obama's wife, poking fun at her dress sense and comparing her to former First Lady Jackie Onassis by dubbing her "Blackie O". But she backed out of using the line on her chat show for US network E! - to avoid criticism that the joke was racially-motivated. Rivers tells Britain's Independent Magazine, "I was going to compare her to Jackie O, but call her Blackie O."

Wildlife officials have killed a grizzly bear in Wyoming and a grizzly bear in Montana to head-off potential lawsuits. The Montana grizzly killed and partially consumed Kevin Kammer at a Gallatin National Forest campground near Cooke City, Mont. on July 29. The Wyoming grizzly killed 70 year-old botanist Erwin Evert on June 17 on the Shoshone National Forest near the East Entrance of Yellowstone National Park. The circumstances were quite different, but the decision to kill the bears was undoubtedly influenced by a 1996 court case over the terrible bear mauling of 16 year-old Anna Knochel at a U.S. Forest...

What is the environmental movement thinking? Now extending the list of their mistakes is a Robert Kennedy Jr. campaign to dump millions of tons of hog waste into American rivers … while his trial lawyer acquaintances take billions suing the modern confinement farms that produce most of America’s meat and eggs. How does that square with Bobby’s long-term claim to be the nation’s top “riverkeeper”? Read more:

Democratic Rep. John Dingell has taken on heads of multibillion-dollar corporations, Cabinet secretaries and presidents during his 47 years as a congressman. But he has had few real political challenges like the one he is facing this summer. The most senior member of the House is looking at his toughest re-election bid in almost four decades, and the challenge is coming from a younger, more liberal congresswoman in his own party. Rep. Lynn Rivers got her political start in the mid-1980s when she was frustrated with her daughter's reading program and ran for the school board. Neither candidate wants to...

FARGO, N.D. – Weary residents of this sandbagged city came together in churches Sunday, counting their blessings that the Red River finally stopped rising and praying the levees would hold back its wrath. A brief levee break that swamped a school provided a warning of the kind of threat that still hangs over them in the days ahead. Church services that are a staple of life on Sunday mornings in Fargo took on greater significance as people gathered after a week of round-the clock sandbagging. They sang hymns and held hands, asking together for divine help in avoiding disaster. "At...

The U.S. Forest Service is moving ahead on a proposal to determine whether parts of the Colorado River and Deep Creek are suitable candidates for inclusion in the national Wild and Scenic River System. The Colorado River Water Conservation District, however, is looking at ways to fend off such a designation. “We’re working on coming up with something that protects the values that make them eligible for wild and scenic designation without imposition of all the federal controls,” said Chris Treese of the river district. The river district is hoping to preserve flexibility and greater local control on the management...

Des Moines, IA (AHN) - The flooding of the Mississippi River has brought out to the open the fact that half of 31 levees between southern Iowa and St. Louis are dated and could no longer withstand the river's rampaging waters.According to the Army Corps of Engineers the majority of the levees were build three decades ago, while some were as old as 6 decades. With a National Weather Service forecast of more rains and higher waters on the river, the army engineers fear at least 18 of the levees would give way and this would result to worst flooding...

I 'm with Joyce Kilmer -- "I think that I shall never see/ A poem lovely as a tree." I'm even with city Commissioner Dan Saltzman, who recently waxed poetical before the Portland City Council on the "incredible" "show-stopping" trees growing in Portland. But before I could recall the last lines of Kilmer's poem -- "Poems are made by fools like me, / But only God can make a tree!" -- Saltzman went on to say something that's creepy and chilling: "It sometimes pains me to think that we have no ability to control their destiny -- that a private...
