WASHINGTON — Republicans are trying a seemingly successful technique found in Democratic campaign playbooks, linking their opponent to an objectionable gaffe much the way Democrats have pinned Republican candidates to politically unpopular President Bush. That appears to be the game plan as the GOP seeks to make John Kerry a last-minute issue before next Tuesday's midterm election by demanding to know whether their Democratic opponents support the Massachusetts senator's recent criticism of U.S. troops in Iraq. "Sen. Cantwell is Sen. Kerry's host in our state," reads a press release from Mike McGavick, Washington Sen. Maria Cantwell's Republican opponent. "She has...

LOS ANGELES A woman who was convicted of repeatedly running her car over a Hispanic man she called "road kill" will be sentenced to a state mental hospital after a jury found her insane. The panel deliberated for four hours Tuesday before returning its verdict in a retrial of the Sept. 1, 2000, death of Jesus Plascencia, 65. Marie Elise West, 41, of Hermosa Beach was convicted of second-degree murder in November 2004 for running over the restaurant worker outside a Van Nuys bagel shop, but that jury deadlocked on whether she was sane at the time of the crime....

One look at you tells me all I need to know about you. I am so tired of liberals that think they are so brilliant. You are such a stupid jackass. You are so stupid you probably believe that the Bush administration orchestrated the attacks on 9/11. Every time you go on the internet, every time you make a bank transaction, or pay a bill, every time you try to email a congressman or senator they are getting so much information off of you. Of course it is all a conspiracy by the Bush administration. I have screwed around by...

AUSTIN – Yeehaw! Texans who brag they do things bigger and better are about to go faster too. State transportation officials on Thursday boosted speed limits on two stretches of rural highway from 75 mph to 80, leaving wandering armadillos and feral hogs a split-second less time to avoid becoming roadkill. It will be the highest posted speed limit in the country. New speed signs should be up in the next few days. And while state officials say the roads can accommodate it, safety and energy conservation advocates warn it will cost lives and hit drivers in the wallet at...

CAPE CANAVERAL, Florida (Reuters) - NASA is trying to rid the Kennedy Space Center of vultures after the shuttle struck one of the large birds during lift-off last year on the first flight after the Columbia disaster. The space center has set up what it calls a "road kill posse" to quickly clear as many carcasses as possible from the 6,000-acre site (2,400-hectare), in hopes of encouraging the vulture population to relocate by cutting off its food supply. When shuttle Discovery lifted off the launch pad last July on the first flight since the 2003 Columbia accident, it hit a...

As I came back from the picture tour of Iran (such nice photos) it occurred to me that the pics of women who were not wearing head scarves were old and of a former time in that country. There were no photos of women walking alone on the streets nor in ski attire nor in any of numerous settings in which you would normally expect to see them. As I looked at the high-rise apartments and condos, I wondered how many women and children were being abused within the walls at the time of the photograph being snapped. Sometimes it's...

A potential Off Broadway production of "My Name Is Rachel Corrie," an acclaimed solo show about an American demonstrator killed by an Israeli bulldozer while trying to stop the destruction of a Palestinian home, has been postponed because of concerns about the show's political content. The production, a hit at the Royal Court Theater in London last year, had been tentatively scheduled to start performances at the New York Theater Workshop in the East Village on March 22. But yesterday, James C. Nicola, the artistic director of the workshop, said he had decided to postpone the show after polling local...

Fellow Americans, there comes a time every mans life when we must give up ourselves before we are worthy to recieve. There comes a time in this war on terror when in order to protect liberty, we have to give it up in the mean time for safty. That's right folks. Today, Americans have forsaken the creator for the creation and have decided that they would value our "civil liberties" than protecting western civilization and rich white people from the tender mercies of radical Islamic terrorists. Selfish liberals insist and whine that Bush has no right to spy on Americans...

The Palestinian people have spoken and their voice has been heard. No, the results did not surprise me; I have been speaking about a 55 percent Hamas victory for several weeks. The handwriting was on the walls, but the pollsters and the analysts failed to see it. The majority of Palestinians chose Hamas not only as a protest vote against the corruption of Fatah and the PA, as many Palestinians will tell us. The people also voted for Hamas because of its political agenda, and the Hamas won because most Palestinians share the belief that the negotiated process based on...

After reading all of the crap that people have been saying regarding Adult Private Social Clubs, I felt that I had to post an article and give my opinion. I am sick and tired of all the religous groups that are saying that there are drugs, prostitution, minors, non-consenting people, and just immoral people at these clubs! First of all, who do these people think they are to decide what is morally right or wrong for me? I believe that I have a good set of morals. I am a law abiding, tax paying citizen, I work full time and...

Five Deer Leap to Deaths From W.Va. Garage 2 hours, 53 minutes ago RANSON, W.Va. - Either they misjudged the distance or they couldn't take the traffic. For reasons that mystify authorities, five deer that made their way onto the top of a five-story parking garage suddenly leaped to their deaths Sunday. Police Cpl. Steve Cox found the does' bodies on a service road to the Charles Town Races & Slots, next to a security van they'd narrowly missed. "They took the plunge," he said. "It was just absolutely weird." A woman called police when she saw the deer falling,...

WASHINGTON (AFP) - US President George W. Bush said that Palestinians might not have an independent state before he leaves office in January 2009, but urged them to crack down now on extremists who target Israel. After talks with Palestinian leader Mahmud Abbas, Bush renewed his support for Palestinian statehood bit did not second his guest's call for an immediate resumption of talks under the US-backed "roadmap" to peace with Israel. "I believe that two democratic states living side by side in peace is possible. I can't tell you when it's going to happen. It's happening," Bush said during a...

June 26, 2005 Guest Viewpoint: The party's over for betrayed Republican By James Chaney As of today, after 25 years, I am no longer a Republican. I take this step with deep regret, and with a deep sense of betrayal. I still believe in the vast power of markets to inspire ideas, motivate solutions and eliminate waste. I still believe in international vigilance and a strong defense, because this world will always be home to people who will avidly seek to take or destroy what we have built as a nation. I still believe in the protection of individuals and...

I am very worried for Karl Rove. Ir appears he is going to jail, and I don't want him to end up in a bad place where bad things could happen to him (what were those bad federal prisons referred to in the movie "Office Space?") Can we start a petition to give to his sentencing judge to have him sent to a nice prison? Maybe he coould go where Martha Stewart went. Or is that just for women. Let's make sure he goes to a nice place, though.

Canadian Press July 13, 2005 WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) - Some customers say wild horses couldn't drag them to the table at a New Zealand restaurant that's offering a chargrilled horsemeat dish called "Mr. Ed is Dead." Restaurant owner David Kerr said Wednesday that he received lots of complaints and abusive phone calls after he started serving horse steaks at his eatery in Hamilton, North Island, as part of an annual event during which restaurateurs compete to offer the best out-of-the-ordinary culinary delights to diners. The calls were "pretty lively and disgusting and not comforting for the staff," Kerr said,...

The Royal Court Theatre, one of London most prestigious venues, is staging a play glorifying a young American radical who was killed after jumping in front of a moving Israeli army bulldozer that was attempting to demolish a structure suspected of concealing tunnels used for smuggling weapons. But what about the real victims of the Intifada? Does anyone remember them? "My Name is Rachel Thaler" is not the title of a play that is likely to be produced anytime soon in London. Thaler, aged 16, was blown up at a pizzeria in an Israeli shopping mall. She died after an...
