Fortress Safe has recalled 61,000 biometric gun safes which use fingerprint technology to unlock after a child managed to open one and kill himself. The US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and Fortress ordered the withdrawal of the safes from the market because the biometric reader on the lock can be opened by unauthorized users. It is unclear how or why the glitch has occurred. In their recall, the government agency said they are aware of a lawsuit against Fortress alleging a 12-year-old died after obtaining a firearm from one of these safes and shot himself. Further details on the...

If the folks at Liberty Safe were hoping that their new policies allowing customers to remove the factory-set access code from the company’s “secure database” would quell the furor over the release of one gun owner’s code to federal law enforcement officials, they got a rude awakening on Tuesday when Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey announced his office is now formally investigating Liberty Safe’s policies and practices. At issue, according to a press release from Bailey’s office, is whether Liberty Safe “fully discloses” to customers when and why it allows third parties to access a customer’s safe “when either the...

I would like to buy a gun safe for my son for Christmas. It needs to hold both long guns and semi-autos. I'm on Social Security, so I don't have an infinite amount of money. He does a lot of target shooting, so it needs to hold boxes of bulk ammo. My son served four years in the Marines, so he knows what he' doing. We live in Central Texas, so if you know of places near, say, Waco, that would be helpful. If you've upgraded and have one for sale, that would be okay, too.

The Department of Justice today announced a new rule to help enable the safe and secure storage of firearms and published a Best Practices Guide for federal firearms licensees (FFLs). This new rule implements the existing Gun Control Act requirement that federal firearms licensees that sell firearms to the general public (non-licensees) must certify that they have available secure gun storage or safety devices. “Today’s announcements build on the department’s efforts to reduce the risk of firearms falling into the wrong hands,” said Attorney General Merrick B. Garland. “Gun safety is a Department of Justice priority, and we will continue...

In an odd announcement that came from the Department of Justice on Monday, federal officials now are requiring that firearms retailers certify that they are selling gun safes, or similar products. The DOJ explained its new rule is "to help enable the safe and secure storage of firearms" and "implements the existing Gun Control Act requirement that federal firearms licensees that sell firearms to the general public must certify that they have available secure gun store or safety devices." Merrick Garland, the attorney general, cast the rule in the light of gun safety. "We will continue to take all appropriate...

08/15/2018 Illinois manufacturer to lay off 150 workers, move to Mexico By Associated Press A storage safe manufacturer is closing two factories in northern Illinois and moving operations to Mexico to counteract the effects of metal tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump’s administration. Stack-on Products will lay off about 150 people at its Wauconda and McHenry plants when they close Oct. 12, the Chicago Tribune reports. Human resources director Al Fletcher said Tuesday the decision to relocate operations to Juarez, Mexico, was made about two months ago. That’s when Trump announced tariffs on numerous goods and materials from China as...

For decades, gun owners were forced to make difficult choices or to compromise when it came to firearms storage. On one hand, owners needed firearms to be stored securely to protect them from theft and to ensure the safety of younger family members. At the same time, protecting those same loved ones often required that the firearms be quickly and easily available for access in case of an intruder or other emergency. There have been excellent gun safes on the market for decades, and many do their intended job very well. But until recently, gun safes were all about security...

Ohio Man Orders Empty Gun Safe, Finds 300 Pounds of Pot Inside 8:35AM Saturday August 17, 2013 e 8:35AM Saturday August 17, 2013 ) (SHELBY COUNTY, Ohio) --An Ohio man expected the gun safe he ordered online to be empty, police said. But instead, he found $425,000-worth of tightly wrapped marijuana bricks inside. “I’ve been in law enforcement for 47 years and I’ve never seen anything like this,” Shelby County, Ohio, Sheriff John L. Lenhart said. ”It’s quite effective if you think about it: wrapped airtight to withstand high temperatures. Drug-sniffing dogs probably couldn’t smell it.” It turned out the...

The knowledge base on FR is awesome when it comes to all things gun related. I am looking for suggestions for the best bedroom quick access safe for one or two of my handguns. The grandkids come over often so I want a small safe, and since I am a married man it shouldn't be ugly as sin or overly large (aesthetics, you know). My wife and I need glasses so I want easy access in the dark. I am strongly considering fingerprint scanning safes. Please help me whittle down hours of research!

"People are just plain scared," said Nancy Bryan, owner of Santa Ana, Calif.-based Maximum Security, who noted that sales started increasing about three years ago at the onset of the recession. Brown Safe said many of its customers have been making purchases over the past few weeks because they no longer trust their banks and are uncertain about stocks.
