After reports emerged that fish sellers were labeling rainbow trout as salmon, the Chinese government made a startling announcement. According to the New York Times, Chinese regulators announced this week that, far from cracking down on mislabeled fish, rainbow trout can legally be labeled as salmon. Incorrectly labeled fish—whether accidentally or intentionally—is a worldwide issue. Reports have indicated that much of the world’s fish is mislabeled; the advocacy group Oceana ran a test and found that one in five fish samples were mislabeled worldwide. Sometimes these are understandable: can you really tell the difference between red snapper and red sea...

NEWPORT, Ore. (AP) — The 700-pound sea lion blinked in the sun, sniffed the sea air and then lazily shifted to the edge of the truck bed and plopped onto the beach below. Freed from the cage that carried him to the ocean, the massive marine mammal shuffled into the surf, looked left, looked right and then started swimming north as a collective groan went up from wildlife officials who watched from the shore. After two days spent trapping and relocating the animal designated #U253, he was headed back to where he started — an Oregon river 130 miles (209...

And the word of the Lord came unto me, saying, Son of man, set thy face against Gog, the land of Magog, the chief prince of Meshech and Tubal, and prophesy against him, And say, Thus saith the Lord God; Behold, I am against thee, O Gog, the chief prince of Meshech and Tubal: And I will turn thee back, and put hooks into thy jaws, and I will bring thee forth, and all thine army, horses and horsemen, all of them clothed with all sorts of armour, even a great company with bucklers and shields, all of them handling...

HIXTON, Wis. (WKBT) - Nestled in the small town of Hixton, Wisconsin, sits a one-of-a-kind farm. Superior Fresh is the first of its kind indoor Atlantic Salmon farm in the country and it's one of the largest aquaponics facilities in the world. The facility combines aquaculture and hydroponics, where waste from fish will be used to supply nutrients for plants grown in water. The 720-acre-farm uses recirculating technologies that collect water and reuse it to grow plants. That water is collected from the aquaculture systems which carry 120,000 pounds of Atlantic salmon. Nutrient-rich water from the fish is then used...

SAN FRANCISCO (CN) – A federal judge said Friday he will likely order the federal government to reallocate water, some earmarked for commercial interests, to stave off a salmon die-off on the California-Oregon border. Two Native American tribes sued the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation last year, claiming its bungled management of Klamath River waterways allowed a deadly parasite to infect 91 percent of endangered juvenile Coho and Chinook salmon.

Giant, spike-toothed salmon that weighed almost 400 lbs. once made their home in the ancient coastal waters of the Pacific Ocean, according to new research. The now-extinct salmon species spawned in California rivers approximately 11 million to 5 million years ago, the scientists said. The fish measured up to 9 feet long, with spike-like teeth that were more than 1 inch long. Though its dagger-like teeth could have been deadly for prey, the ancient salmon was probably a filter feeder rather than a predatory species, meaning the fish took in water full of plankton as it swam, as modern Pacific...

A giant extinct salmon used a mouthful of spiked teeth to fight rivals more than five million years ago. The coastal waters of the Pacific were home to the bizarre species with huge teeth, a new study shows. The spike-toothed salmon reached sizes of three to nine feet in length (0.91 to 2.7m) - much larger than the typical salmon found in the Pacific today.

The Golden Gate Salmon Association is among several litigants in a lawsuit challenging the Food and Drug Administration’s plans to develop genetically engineered salmon. Here's some info on the lawsuit: A broad coalition of environmental, consumer, and commercial and recreational fishing organizations today sued the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for approving the first-ever genetically engineered (GE) food animal, an Atlantic salmon engineered to grow quickly. The man-made salmon was created by AquaBounty Technologies, Inc. with DNA from three fish: Atlantic salmon, Pacific king salmon, and Arctic ocean eelpout. This marks the first time any government in the world...

The Food and Drug Administration on Thursday approved genetically modified salmon, the first such altered animal allowed for human consumption in the United States. The Obama administration had stalled in approving the fast-growing salmon for more than five years amid consumer concerns about eating genetically modified foods. But the agency said Thursday the fish is safe to eat. In announcing the approval, the FDA said that there are "no biologically relevant differences in the nutritional profile of AquAdvantage Salmon compared to that of other farm-raised Atlantic salmon." AquAdvantage Salmon was created by the Massachusetts-based company AquaBounty. Ron Stotish, the company's...

The House Still Stands: Hardy’s of Alnwick Nov 9th, 2015 | Categories: Al James, England, Fishing | by Al James Hardy “The Perfect†It’s steelhead and salmon season out West from Northern California up to B.C. and Alaska. The trout gear has been stashed in the closet until next May and we’re breaking out the heavy duty rods and reels in search of finicky anadromous fish. While modern, freight train-stopping disc drags are popular, (Hatch, Nautilus, Tibor, Abel, Ross) many two-hand enthusiasts prefer to outfit their spey rods with a simple click and pawl Hardy reel. This mechanism doesn’t offer...

It was supposed to be a routine photo op. During a historic trip to Alaska intended to call attention to climate change, President Obama got a bit of a surprise while at a fishing village at Kanakanak Beach. He was holding up a caught fish for the cameras when the salmon spawned on his shoes. It all started off so innocently. A local fisherwoman retrieved the salmon from a net in shallow water and handed it over to the leader of the free world. As soon as the president had the fish firmly in his grasp, nature took its course....

During his historic trip to Alaska, President Barack Obama spent some time fishing at Kanakanak Beach in Dillingham and in a comical moment, a salmon spawned on his shoes. Wearing a pair of orange gloves, Obama examined some of the fish that he caught. The second one he picked up began squirting at his shoes. "Uh-oh, what's happening there?" he asked.

Local Angler scores … a 27.5 pound Chinook salmon and a 7-pound striper on the Miss Anita off of Bodega Bay. George Lewis, a reader from Napa, sent me this nice photo of two of his fish. George said that skipper Aaron Orsini did an outstanding job of guiding the boat in heavy swells. This gave George the best chance to bring the fish to the net. He was the second local angler in just a week to tell me that the Miss Anita is a well-run boat. It is a 6-pack – fishing just six anglers – so it’s...

Republicans are investigating what they call "improper influence" from a national green group on the Obama administration's signature Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) climate change regulation. The House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, as well as Republicans on the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, are demanding the EPA and the environmental group Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) hand over documents on the organization's involvement in drafting the proposed carbon pollution rules. The investigation is based on a New York Times ' report that said the NRDC provided the blueprint used for the rules, and "heavily influenced the president's proposal." While...

OSLO (Reuters) - Pink salmon in the Pacific Ocean face a double threat of acidification linked to greenhouse gas emissions since it slows their early growth in rivers and disrupts the chemistry of seawater, a study showed on Monday. Impacts have in the past been more studied in the seas than in fresh water. But the Canadian study found that acidification of rivers could make young pink salmon, the most abundant type in the Pacific, smaller and more vulnerable to predators by dampening their ability to smell danger. Damage done by acidification "in fresh water in pink salmon could occur...

The pressure for Arizona Rep. Matt Salmon to challenge Sen. John McCain doesn’t end with conservative outside groups hoping to unseat the five-term Senator. “Numerous members in the House — and some members of the Senate — which has shocked me greatly,” have encouraged him to run in a GOP primary, Salmon told CQ Roll Call Wednesday. “It seems like the drumbeat is getting louder and louder and louder. From colleagues here, from colleagues over on the Senate side,” Salmon said. But Salmon, 57, isn’t ready to take the jump — at least not yet. And he thinks much of...

GRANTS PASS, Ore. (AP) — Water use and other actions by the marijuana industry in the Emerald Triangle of Northern California and Southern Oregon are threatening salmon already in danger of extinction, federal biologists said Tuesday. Concerns about the impact of pot farming were raised by the NOAA Fisheries Service in its final recovery plan for coho salmon in the region. The full plan was to be posted on the agency's website. A copy obtained in advance calls for determining then decreasing the amount of water that pot growers illegally withdraw from creeks where young fish struggle to survive. Pot...
