(CNN) -- In the cultural battle over whether to use the seasonal greeting "happy holidays" or "Merry Christmas," the latter appears to be winning, according to a CNN/USA Today/Gallup Poll released Tuesday. In the poll, which surveyed 1,003 adult Americans by phone, 69 percent said they prefer "Merry Christmas" over "happy holidays," which garnered 29 percent. Compared with the 2004 Christmas -- or holiday -- season, the number of people who said they use "happy holidays" has dropped 12 percentage points, from 41 percent to 29 percent.

Pope weighs into fight to keep Christ in Christmas By Richard Owen Europe's religious heritage is threatened by waves of 'Christianophobia', the Vatican believes. The Pope urged Christians to embrace the true meaning of Christmas yesterday, amid a row in Italy over traditional celebrations. Presiding over a ceremonial switching-on of Christmas tree lights in St Peter’s Square, where 10,000 pilgrims had gathered, the Pope cited a phrase from the Psalms to draw attention to “the meaning of this liturgical season of Advent”, an aide said. “It is a royal psalm which portrays a just and devout king who defends the...

It’s Time to Dump ‘Happy Holidays’     12/23/2003By Robert KnightThe phrase has become a way to avoid any recognition of Christmas.Remember those little yellow smiley buttons that seemed so cheerful at first but then drove everyone mad because of their underlying insincerity? Well, “Happy Holidays” is even worse: It might even be a form of bigotry.Oh, I know that most folks don’t mean it that way, but hear me out. The phrase used to be another way to say “Merry Christmas.” Now, it’s a way to avoid any recognition of Christmas. Everyone knows that the shopping and carols and nonstop “holiday” advertising...

Committee to Save Merry ChristmasPO Box 251 Orangevale, California 95662-0251Contact us by email The War:A covert and deceptive war has been waged on Christmas to remove any mention of it from the public square during the Christmas season. During the past several years, and with great effectiveness, we have observed a consistent and relentless move to culturally pressure merchants, businessmen and individuals to remove the words “Merry Christmas” from their advertising, decorations and promotional materials. The festive atmosphere of the past that surrounded the Christmas season in department stores which energized shoppers, supported their...
