Born on December 7, 1928, Noam Chomsky was raised by Ashkenazi Jewish immigrants in Philadelphia. Though his father was a Hebrew scholar who studied medieval grammar, Chomsky lacked direction through school and university and only committed to the study of linguistics when he took up a post at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1955. It wasn't long, however, before the young unknown scholar single-handedly revolutionized the field of linguists, his book Syntactic Structures (1957) kickstarting his concept of "transformational grammar" that argued — contrary to the behaviourist fad of the time — that our linguistic capacity is genetic...

Former NASA astronaut and Navy veteran Scott Kelly apologized Sunday after facing backlash for a tweet praising Winston Churchill. “One of the greatest leaders of modern times, Sir Winston Churchill said, ‘in victory, magnanimity.’ I guess those days are over,” Mr. Kelly, a veteran of four space flights, tweeted to his 5.76 million followers Sunday afternoon. Seven hours later, Mr. Kelly apologized for the quote, saying he would work on educating himself on Churchill’s purported misdeeds. "Did not mean to offend by quoting Churchill. My apologies. I will go and educate myself further on his atrocities, racist views which I...

FULL TITLE: Michael Moore Thinks Donald Trump Wrote NYTimes Op-Ed Piece: “He’s the master of distraction, he wants us to believe there are adults in the room” Michael Moore made the scary prediction that Donald Trump was “the last president of the United States” in the trailer to his new documentary “Fahrenheit 11/9,” which premiere in New York Thursday evening at Alice Tully Hall. On the red carpet I asked the filmmaker exactly what he meant by that. “It’s that we may not have our United States the way that we knew it. If he’s successful in dismantling our democracy...

The legal team for former CBS and PBS host Charlie Rose say his accusers are attempting to build up "routine interactions" into allegations of sexual harassment, according to a motion filed in New York Supreme Court on Friday. The motion comes four months after Rose was sued by three employees who all claim the "CBS This Morning" co-host made lewd remarks and touched them inappropriately while stating they faced retaliation at their jobs for raising the issues. Rose's attorneys filed the motion in an attempt to get their lawsuit dismissed. The motion argues the accusers are overstating the allegations in...

When Elise Jordan was writing speeches for George W. Bush and Condi Rice, it’s unlikely that her lexicon included such vulgarities. But now that she works for MSNBC, Jordan needs to establish her liberal street cred by breaking out such coarse lingo. On today’s Morning Joe, Mika Brzezinski asked Jordan whether the Trump base, as represented by the people at attendance at yesterday’s rally in West Virginia, would be moved by yesterday’s news about Paul Manafort and Michael Cohen. Responded Jordan. “The short answer is ‘no.’ It’s very baked in as of now and is not going to change that...

Antifa activists counter-protesting the so-called ‘Unite the Right 2’ rally across from the White House in Washington, D.C. on Sunday spoke on camera to Daily Caller reporter Benny Johnson, bluntly stating they want to murder President Donald Trump. Here was my question to the progressive protesters (I asked everyone the same question): “If Donald Trump showed up here, what would you say or do?” Over half-dozen progressives voluntarily told me they would kill Trump. This is the *definition* of “Violence on both sides”” “I was only at the event for one hour. I had 5 people threaten to physically harm...

Abraham Lincoln's Independence Day Address of July 7, 1863 Researched by James R. Heintze. All rights reserved. Abraham Lincoln's Independence Day address of 1863 in Washington is significant in that it was presented three days after the city had celebrated the holiday and represented one of only a few Fourth of July addresses given in Washington during the 19th century that were reprinted in newspapers outside the city. Perhaps not referred to as often as his other speeches, Lincoln's July 7 address is nonetheless important. Presented, apparently spontaneously, as a response to hundreds of persons who had gathered in front...

Sen. Jeff Flake (R-AZ) believes the recent three-day government shutdown and the deal to end it on Monday gave Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) recipients and other illegal immigrant Dreamers “a better chance” of getting a pathway to citizenship. Flake has been working with Sens. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) and Dick Durbin (D-IL) on a bill that would give a “12-year pathway to citizenship for about 2 million” illegal immigrant Dreamers and “legal status for their parents.” On Monday, Senate Democrats agreed to a three-week spending bill in exchange for a DACA vote before February 8. “I do think that...

A whole lot of fur has been flying since last Thursday, when The New York Times published a game-changing investigative story about Harvey Weinstein’s sexual misconduct that in lightning speed brought the mogul to his knees. He apologized and took an immediate leave of absence from the company he co-founded, but that wasn’t enough. His board members and legal advisers have been resigning en masse. And as new, ugly details emerge of three decades of settlements for sex-related offenses, he’s quickly becoming a national pariah. I applaud The New York Times and writers Jodi Kantor and Megan Twohey for getting...

A group of military leaders broke with President Donald Trump and rebuked the "Unite the Right" rally in Charlottesville over the weekend — a near-historic development for U.S. civil-military relations. Since Sunday, five U.S. service chiefs — representing the Army, Air Force, Navy, Marines and National Guard — have tweeted their denunciation of the white nationalists whose rally led to the killing of a counter-protester on Saturday. Two police officers covering the rally also died when their helicopter crashed. The joint chiefs condemnation of racism and white supremacist groups is notable because it stands in stark contrast with Trump's statements...

Perfect timing-rattle their cages big time . His confirmation hearings would be right in the heat of the election season, articulating the GOP positions that the cowards in our party won't defend. What are the Democrats gonna do? There's more: When the election is over Cruz has the option of DECLINING the job, starting a new set of hearings, pissing off and exposing OUR turncoats. It all starts with an orchestrating meeting between Trump and Clarence Thomas-payback. LMFAO.

Sen. John McCain said he did 'what any citizen would do' in turning over the dirty dossier, which contained unconfirmed secrets about the president-elect, over to the FBI. The Guardian charted the path of how the dossier came to be and how it was that McCain got his hands on the controversial documents. The story of the dossier began with an investigative firm in Washington, D.C., being tapped by one of Trump's primary allies to dig up some opposition research on the Republican hopeful.

Commissioner John Wiley Price Votes Against Honoring Assassinated Police Officers Dallas, TX – Dallas County Commissioner John Wiley Price voted to oppose a resolution to honor murdered police officers, blaming police officers for the assassinations. The Wednesday vote was supposed to be largely ceremonial, but gained unexpected opposition as Commissioner John Wiley Price argued that law enforcement should not be honored, according to Fox4. “I think it’s interesting in this country how you again try to frame the narrative with regards to other people who’ve lost their life at the hands of law enforcement,” Price said. “No life is more...

Embattled ex-IRS executive Lois Lerner was in federal court last week, asking a judge to seal her forthcoming deposition due to the inflammatory nature of her testimony. Lerner told the judge that if her actions at the IRS were to become public knowledge, she could face death threats from angry Americans – particularly those on the conservative side of the spectrum. Lerner is well-known for her role in the IRS’s partisan targeting of Tea Party groups; under the Obama administration, the IRS singled out nonprofit groups with conservative, Tea Party-ish style names for extra scrutiny. Many of their cases lingered...
