Last Tuesday evening at the Canton Public Library, a group of concerned local citizens, united by their shared values and a deep and abiding terror over a Donald Trump-led White House, gathered to discuss ways that they could support their fellow residents and help ensure that the Canton community remains “safe for diversity.” “We’re a group dedicated to making every family in Canton feel safe,” explained the promotional flyer prepared by the group’s founder, Kathleen “KK” Howley, a former senior reporter for Bloomberg News. “We want to know if our neighbors need help, and we want to stand with them.A...

New videos have surfaced of a Yale professor being protested and yelled at by students for sending an email telling them to ignore people dressed in offensive or racist Halloween costumes. The fallout of the email saw Nicholas Christakis, the master of Silliman College at Yale, and his wife Erika, a faculty member, resign from their positions at the university. The new videos, which appeared on The Federalist, give a greater insight into what the students were demanding from Christakis, and his defense that cultural appropriation on Halloween is permissible. Many students in the mob of almost 100 can be...

A skyrocketing number of students are seeking crisis counseling at Eastern Carolina University, prompting the school to make sure it educates pupils not just on academics but also on how to cope with life's challenges. ECU reported a 16 percent increase in student counseling appointments in the past two years. Those involving a crisis were up 52 percent, according to a July report that shocked officials on the Greenville, North Carolina, campus. "It wasn't just the numbers, it was the intensity and severity," said ECU Director of Counseling Valerie Kisler-van Reede. "It felt like something very different was going on...
  • Dear Fellow Upstate NYers – I’m voting Cruz on April 19, here’s why

It’s not often that a Republican presidential primary in New York matters. This year it does. It’s a time for choosing, to paraphrase Ronald Reagan. The choice is between Donald Trump and Ted Cruz, though John Kasich is on the ballot too. The real race to the nomination has been Trump v. Cruz for at least several weeks and it is likely to remain that way. Faced with that choice, it’s easy. Legal Insurrection started in October 2008 in anticipation of the Obama presidency. We were part of the Tea Party movement (though aligned with no specific group) since the...

I’ve reached a breaking point with those who continue to defend Donald Trump’s endless brutishness. If you went back in time a year, and asked Trump supporters if they would ever vote for a man who made fun of POWs, mocked the physically handicapped, compared another candidate to a child molester, and shifted positions as frequently as a fat guy in a church pew, they would have likely said “No.” How did we get here? How did we get to a place where Trump’s rhetoric and behavior is not only accepted, but emulated? Donald Trump is a master manipulator. He...

Am I proud to call Oregon my home? You're damn right I am. Do we have problems here? Of course we do, everywhere has problems. But the thing about Oregon is, if you've ever lived here you can probably agree Oregon is truly is a special place to live, and our problems are really very minimal compared to so many other places you could live.
  • VIDEO: Students Sign Petition to Ban 'Racist' Song 'White Christmas' from Radio

Last week, I presented some college students with a petition urging radio stations to stop playing the holiday classic "White Christmas" because the song only focuses on "White" Christmases. This clearly makes it racially insensitive, since it completely ignores Christmases of other colors. Students were all too willing to check their privilege and take a stand against Bing Crosby's racially charged micro-aggression. Just watch.

A year ago I received an invitation from the head of Counseling Services at a major university to join faculty and administrators for discussions about how to deal with the decline in resilience among students. At the first meeting, we learned that emergency calls to Counseling had more than doubled over the past five years. Students are increasingly seeking help for, and apparently having emotional crises over, problems of everyday life. Recent examples mentioned included a student who felt traumatized because her roommate had called her a “bitch” and two students who had sought counseling because they had seen a...
