Don't be surprised if NFL moving trucks show up in Oakland and San Diego next year. According to Texans owner Bob McNair, sending those two teams to Los Angeles is slowly starting to turn into the NFL's most likely relocation scenario. All 32 NFL owners are set to meet in Houston on Jan. 12-13 with one big goal: Figure out who's moving to L.A. To make the move to Los Angeles, a team needs to get approval from 24 of the league's 32 owners, and thanks to a last ditch effort by the city of St. Louis, McNair doesn't see...

WILDWOOD • Call it a case of cabin fever. A historic log cabin in Wildwood has gone missing, and St. Louis County Police are investigating. Sometime between Nov. 24 and 29, someone disassembled and carted off the pieces of the cabin off Highway 109 just south of Eatherton Road in Wildwood. The family who owned it had planned to donate the cabin to the city for use as a historic attraction. St. Louis County Police spokesman Brian Schellman said the cabin could barely be seen from the highway. "It’s pretty secluded, where, if nobody’s paying attention, you can probably get...

The St. Louis Rams have lost four straight games after a 4-3 start, the latest being a desultory 31-7 loss in Cincinnati on Sunday. Just don't try to tell coach Jeff Fisher that his team isn't trying. "Anyone implies that it's an effort issue, they can kiss my ass," Fisher said. "There's no effort problems on this team. That's what happens when teams lose four in a row is people say it's effort. Come to practice, watch this team play and ask any other opponent or opposing coach. It's not an effort issue right now. "It's execution. It's 70 percent...

The San Diego Chargers will file for relocation to Los Angeles when the NFL opens the application window in January, Mark Fabiani told The Mighty 1090 AM radio show. “At this point yes, because there's no sign that the other team or teams are not going to file,” said Fabiani, who serves as the Chargers’ special counsel. “Everyone assumes all three teams will file, and in that case we can't afford to lose our market in Los Angeles and Orange County.”

It’s beginning to seem like Marty McFly may have been onto something. The Cubs sure are an interesting team to watch. Nothing demonstrates that point more effectively than mad-hatter manager Joe Maddon calling for two suicide squeezes in the second inning on Saturday, en route to a 6-3 win over the St. Louis Cardinals. Now, if you’re like me, you wonder why this isn’t always the play with a runner on third and fewer than two outs. I’ve almost never seen it played correctly by opposing defenses, and isn’t it more reliable than a fly ball to the outfield? But...

ST. LOUIS – Beneath the surface of a St. Louis-area landfill lurk two things that should never meet: a slow-burning fire and a cache of Cold War-era nuclear waste, separated by just 300 meters. Government officials have quietly adopted an emergency plan in case the smoldering embers ever reach the waste, a potentially “catastrophic event” that could send up a plume of radioactive smoke over a densely populated area near the city’s main airport. Although the fire at Bridgeton Landfill has been burning since at least 2010, the plan for a worst-case scenario was developed only a year ago and...

ST. LOUIS • For 17 years, Karen Bryant has watched her beloved neighborhood along Martin Luther King Drive deteriorate. Bryant, who does alterations from a storefront along King, can recite a long list of flourishing businesses that used to line the street. They all left. Now she’s left sandwiched between two vacant buildings. Despite her location on a desolate and run-down area of Martin Luther King, she’s determined to stay. She and her husband even moved in above her shop to ward off thieves who have stolen her air conditioning unit and removed copper pipes from her store, which is...

Mayors from eighteen U.S. cities signed a letter to President Obama saying they are willing to take even more refugees than what has been proposed by the administration. “We will welcome the Syrian families to make homes and new lives in our cities,” wrote the mayors, all of whom are part of the Cities United for Immigration Action coalition. “Indeed, we are writing to say that we stand ready to work with your Administration to do much more and to urge you to increase still further the number of Syrian refugees the United States will accept for resettlement.” “This is...

When the nuns first hit the road in 2012, their mission was to collect stories of economic oppression in protest of the Paul Ryan budget — in defiant response to Pope Benedict XVI's startling decision to launch an investigation into the Leadership Conference of Women Religious, an umbrella group that represents more than 80 percent of religious sisters in the United States. The investigation was an outright attack on women's role in the Church and was referred to as "a crackdown on American nuns." Their alleged transgression was spending too much time on social justice issues, and promoting "certain radical...

Former Texas Gov. Rick Perry suddenly announced he was suspending his presidential campaign Friday. As he did so, he made it abundantly clear that he's still not a fan of real-estate mogul Donald Trump, the Republican front-runner in the race with whom he has often feuded. Speaking at an event in St. Louis, Missouri, Perry repeatedly jabbed at Trump's campaign-trail controversies without using his name. "Demeaning people of Hispanic heritage is not just ignorant, it betrays the example of Christ," Perry said, according to his prepared remarks. "We can enforce our laws and our borders, and we can love all...

My buddy John alerted me to Rick Perry’s exit from the race today. He speculated that now Kasich’s numbers might “take off a little, if not big.” In his text was a quip about the remaining candidates: “good-bye before hello.” For me, I never got a chance to say hello to Perry. Donald Trump was immediately more interesting than all of the other candidates put together. He didn’t have to use self-justifying rhetoric to establish his conservative bona fides. He just said amazing true things, bluntly and spontaneously, that we have long wished all rightwing politicians would say. Trump’s remarks...

In a sweetheart plea bargain deal, Olajuwon Davis and Brandon Orlando Baldwin, both radical black Muslim men in their twenties, received mere seven-year custodial sentences last week from U.S. District Judge...

Leaders in a St. Louis suburb are urgently calling on top Obama administration officials to quickly clean up a landfill with radioactive waste that they believe could catch fire. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has been working for 25 years on the West Lake Landfill in Bridgeton, Mo., which has housed barium sulfate waste from the Manhattan Project since the 1970s. The EPA is still studying the site and considering a wide range of actions to contain the radioactive material under its Superfund program for cleaning severe environmental contamination. But with an underground, smoldering fire in an adjacent landfill, residents...

In the category of unusual entertainers, there are few who could hold a candle to Korla Pandit. There was the jeweled turban. The hypnotizing gaze into the TV camera. And the exotic organ playing that earned him the moniker “the godfather of exotica. ” For 15 minutes every afternoon between 1949 and 1951 on Los Angeles’ KTLA, Pandit would hold court on his own live TV broadcast — drawing in viewers with his alluring expressions and his unusual organ playing. He would go on to appear in more than 900 broadcasts during his career, which included cameos in Hollywood films....
