NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said Sunday that there is currently no imminent military threat from Russia towards a NATO member, highlighting the alliance's strengthened defense capabilities. In an interview with German public broadcaster ARD, Stoltenberg dismissed claims that Russia would attack a member of the alliance if it wins the war in Ukraine. "We do not currently perceive a military threat against a NATO ally in the near future," he said, noting that NATO has been "significantly strengthened" in recent years and all member states have invested "significantly" in their own defense.

NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg warned that the Western military alliance should be ready for bad news from the Ukrainian front as Kyiv continues to defend against Russia's all-out invasion. "Wars develop in phases," Stoltenberg said in an interview Saturday with German broadcaster ARD. "We have to support Ukraine in both good and bad times," he said. "We should also be prepared for bad news,” Stoltenberg added, without being more specific. His comments come as Western allies debate over ammunition and financial aid for Ukraine, and as Moscow boosts its troop levels. Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree on Friday...

NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg visited Ukraine on Thursday for the first time since Russia invaded more than a year ago, a highly symbolic trip that underscores the alliance’s commitment to helping Kyiv defend itself. The Kremlin quickly warned that Ukraine must not be allowed to join NATO. Russia has given various and shifting justifications for going to war, but it has repeatedly pointed to the expansion of the military alliance toward its borders in recent years, including citing fears that Kyiv would be admitted. Images published in local media showed Stoltenberg apparently paying tribute to fallen Ukrainian soldiers in Kyiv’s...

The head of NATO expressed worry that the fighting in Ukraine could spin out of control and become a war between Russia and NATO, according to an interview released Friday. “If things go wrong, they can go horribly wrong,” NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said in remarks to Norwegian broadcaster NRK. “It is a terrible war in Ukraine. It is also a war that can become a full-fledged war that spreads into a major war between NATO and Russia,” he said. “We are working on that every day to avoid that.”

NATO will activate its defensive Response Force in response to Russia's invasion of Ukraine, Secretary Jens Stoltenberg said Thursday. The decision was made by NATO's North Atlantic Council. "Peace on our continent has been shattered," Stoltenberg said. "We now have war in Europe on a scale and of a type we thought belonged to history."

NATO must reduce its “military emissions” in an effort to tackle climate change, Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said on Wednesday. He made the announcement on Twitter as he welcomed the United States’ special envoy for climate — John Kerry — to Brussels. He tweeted: “Great to welcome @ClimateEnvoy John Kerry to Brussels. We agree that climate change makes the world more unsafe, so #NATO needs to step up and play a bigger role in combating it — including by reducing military emissions. I look forward to working closely together. #NATO2030.” Last September, in an op-ed published on the NATO website, Stoltenberg...

NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg warned Saturday that China’s increasing influence had created a “fundamental shift in the global balance of power” that should not be overlooked. In an interview with Germany’s Welt am Sonntag newspaper, that was released in advance, the Norwegian official said that Beijing had the second-largest defense budget in the world after the United States, and was investing heavily in nuclear weapons and long-range missiles that could reach Europe. “One thing is clear: China is coming ever closer to Europe’s doorstep,” he said. “NATO allies must face this challenge together.” […] Stoltenberg stressed that no member country...

Very uplifting, we have a lion fighting for America, at home & abroad. PRESIDENT TRUMP: Good morning, everybody. Good morning to the media — the legitimate media and the fake-news media. Good morning to them. A lot of good people here. Surprising. Q Mr. President, which countries did you want to spend more on NATO in particular? PRESIDENT TRUMP: Just look at the chart. NATO will defend Turkey if the country is ever attacked, the alliance’s new chief Jens Stoltenberg said on Wednesday, amid increased instability on its borders. The former Norwegian PM will visit Turkey next week as Ankara mulls using force to repel ISIL militants in Iraq and Syria. Turkish lawmakers are expected to debate authorising military action on Thursday. “Our responsibility, the basic responsibility, is to stand up and be very clear that we are going to protect Turkey. That collective defence, Article 5, is something which is also going to be applied if Turkey is in any way attacked,” said...

The explosion that rocked a Norwegian government building today was result of a massive vehicle bomb, according to U.S. government sources on the scene. Norwegian news reported one person died and several were injured in the apparent attack. The prime minister, whose office is in the building, survived the blast, a government spokesperson told The Associated Press. Pictures, posted on Twitter, show several buildings with windows blown out. Multiple tweets described people bleeding in the streets. US President George W Bush reportedly doesn't want to meet with Norwegian Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg. Norway also seems to have lost an influential role within NATO, apparently, some say, because of Norway's lack of enthusiasm for the war in Iraq. Norwegian Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg reportedly isn't welcome at the White House. Norwegian Broadcasting (NRK) reported Tuesday that Bush's staff had turned down a request from Stoltenberg's office for a meeting between the two at the White House. Bush, according to the report, was too busy to make room for Stoltenberg in the foreseeable future. NRK reported that Bush's...

Norway's Labour leader Jens Stoltenberg, triumphant after his 'red-green' opposition ousted the centre-right government in the general election, has promised to spend more of Norway's oil bonanza on welfare. 'We will use Norway's great opportunities and income on the common good - jobs for all, good schools, security and care for the elderly,' said Mr Stoltenberg. Mr Stoltenberg, 46, and his alliance beat the tax-cutting government of Prime Minister Kjell Magne Bondevik even though the economy is booming and UN surveys have rated Norway as the best place in the world to live every year since 2001. A trained economist...
