"...Sharpton's National Action Network nonprofit, which is organizing the Martin protest marches, has repeatedly failed to pay taxes. The group currently owes $871,688 for unpaid "payroll taxes and related interest & penalties," according to its latest available Internal Revenue Service disclosure. The group claims to receive more than $3 million in contributions yearly. In 2008, Sharpton aides told the Associated Press that he had begun drawing only a "token" salary from his nonprofit to ease the burden on its finances, and in consideration of his substantial earnings from TV appearances. But IRS filings in the years since show he...

Washington, D.C. – It is possible, possible, that the massive shuffling of Cabinet positions for president Obama will have a positive effect on his next four years in office. With so many people leaving the make-up of the team that led to a lot of mediocrity and divisiveness will be fundamentally altered.timothy geithner leaving obama administration Some of those changes, say Secretary of State, clearly trade one strong player for another but in other places the changeover will not be as smooth or as clearly good. There is, perhaps, no position more important in all of this than the change...

Warren Buffett, in a New York Times Op-Ed piece Monday, is proposing a minimum tax on high incomes and a higher ceiling of $500,000 on increased taxes on wealthy Americans. "I support President Obama's proposal to eliminate the Bush tax cuts for high-income taxpayers. However, I prefer a cutoff point somewhat above $250,000 - maybe $500,000 or so," the Berkshire Hathaway head wrote. "Additionally, we need Congress, right now, to enact a minimum tax on high incomes. I would suggest 30 percent of taxable income between $1 million and $10 million, and 35 percent on amounts above that."

In 2008 Rangel admitted not paying taxes on rental income from a Dominican Republican beach house after it was exposed by the National Legal and Policy Center (NLPC). Geithner: Tax hikes must be part of budgetBy Peter Schroeder - 02/14/12 01:18 PM ET Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner told skeptical Republican senators Tuesday that it is simply not possible to correct the nation’s fiscal problems without raising taxes. Geithner defended President Obama’s 2013 budget proposal before the Senate Finance Committee and said the plan is the only option he sees for helping the economy and addressing the deficit without hurting the middle class. "I do not see how you get there if you are unable ... to contemplate and to embrace modest increases in revenue through tax reform," Geithner...

Mitt Romney could face new questions about his overseas investments after a campaign official acknowledged to NBC News that his campaign is revising his financial disclosure forms to report more than a half dozen offshore holdings, including income from a multi-million dollar Swiss bank account that was not disclosed last year. The tax returns released by the Romney campaign this week showed that the Ann Romney Blind Trust had reported $1,783 in interest income from a bank account held at UBS in Switzerland in 2010. But the Swiss bank account -- as well as other offshore investments in the Cayman...

Vice President Joe Biden today likened the Occupy Wall Street protests to expressions of grassroots frustration by members of the Tea Party. “Let’s be honest with one another,” Biden told an audience on camera at the Washington Ideas Forum. “What is the core of that protest? The core is: The bargain has been breached. The core is the American people do not think the system is fair, or on the level. That is the core is what you’re seeing with Wall Street. “There’s a lot in common with the Tea Party,” he said. “The Tea Party started, why? TARP. They...

In Flint, Michigan, Vice President Joe Biden suggested that more rapes and murders could occur if President Barack Obama's jobs bill is not passed. "In 2008, when Flint had 265 sworn officers on their police force, there were 35 murders and 91 rapes in this city," Biden said. "In 2010, when Flint had only 144 police officers, the murder rate climbed to 65 and rapes--just to pick two categories--climbed to 229. In 2011, you now only have 125 shields. God only knows what the numbers will be this year for Flint if we don't rectify it." The vice president also...

Because of budget cuts, the York School District has been forced to lay off 100 teachers. Waxing at times poetic, Biden stressed the importance of education in keeping the nation competitive.
