Eight years ago, Dan Rather broadcast an explosive report on the Air National Guard service of President George W. Bush. It was supposed to be the legendary newsman’s finest hour. Instead, it blew up in his face, tarnishing his career forever and casting a dark cloud of doubt and suspicion over his reporting—and that of every other journalist on the case. This month, as Rather returns with a new memoir, Joe Hagan finally gets to the bottom of the greatest untold story in modern Texas politics, with exclusive, never-before-seen details that shed fresh light on who was right, who was...

If Texas Democrats, or even Republicans for that matter, thought they’d have a quieter, gentler Rick Perry on their hands in the wake of his . . . um . . . temporary diversion into Presidential politics, they know better today. In a speech Monday in Houston, Perry laid out five fundamental conservative principles for the Texas Legislature to follow, essentially throwing down the gauntlet to any legislator — or wanna-be legislator — who thinks they’ll be able to bring a tax and spend mindset to the Texas Capitol building. Perry’s “Texas Budget Compact” is pretty much bedrock conservative fare:...

It was only three years ago when the political lines converged. On Tax Day at Austin City Hall, Gov. Rick Perry spoke to a crowd of noisy, rowdy Texans in the sort of assembly that quickly became common as the Tea Party wave swept Texas and the country. That crested as Perry was crystallizing his own views on Texas and Washington and fiscal conservatism. It seeded the anti-Washington message of his 2010 race for re-election as governor, found fuller expression in his book, Fed Up! which was published days after that election, and served as the rationale behind his abortive...

Democrats in House of Reps. joined J Street in supporting Obama administration's attempt to force Israel into making painful concessions Seventy-four Democrats in the House of Representatives have joined the dovish J Street organization in supporting the Obama administration's attempt to force Israel into making painful concessions to the Palestinian Authority. “In our view, support for a two-state resolution is inseparable from such support for Israel, its special relationship with the United States, and its very survival as a democratic homeland for the Jewish people,” the letter said. Seven Jewish members signed the letter, including Reps. Steve Cohen (D-Tenn.), John...

The State Chairman of the Republican Party of Texas has come out and expressed support for Texas going back to Winner Take All. Munisteri explained that he has always been a supporter of Winner Take All. [Winner Take All – WTA -- means that all 152 Texas Republican delegates would be awarded to the winner of the Texas Republican primary; proportional means that the number of delegates would be awarded proportionally among the various candidates.] Munisteri said that Texas has the second most Republican delegates (second to California), more than 3 X the number from Florida, and 6 X more than the number from South Carolina. He believes if Texas moves to WTA that our state will stop being ignored as inconsequential and...

College chess champs uproot, move to MissouriAssociated Press – Fri, Apr 6, 2012 COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) — It was one of the most brazen moves in the chess world since the Najdorf Sicilian Defense, perhaps even the Blackmar-Diemer Gambit. Fresh off her second straight national championship, the legendary chess coach at Texas Tech is jumping to another school and taking all the top members of the team with her. No one has ever seen anything like it in intercollegiate competition, not even among powerhouse basketball and football teams that are worth many millions of dollars. Similar deals are not uncommon...

An effort to shake up the GOP primary race is underway in the Longhorn State. The outcome could set the course for a brokered convention by keeping front-runner Mitt Romney from securing enough delegates to win the presidential nomination outright. David Bellow, a member of the State Republican Executive Committee, told The Daily Caller that he believes there is enough support among committee members to call an emergency SREC meeting to vote to change Texas’ primary from a proportional system to winner-take-all delegate state. According to Bellow, the effort has support from the necessary 15 SREC members to petition and...

Boy, that’s some gratitude for you. Texas game ranchers pulled a few African antelope species back from the brink of extinction, and the federal government rewards them 1.) by making it impossible to profit from controlled hunting for the animals; and 2.) devaluing the animals to the point they become impossible to sell. FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) — For years, hundreds of Texas ranchers have made big money on exotic antelopes, with hunters paying up to $10,000 to bag just one dama gazelle, a rare animal with short horns curving outward. Starting Wednesday, however, the U.S. government will stop allowing...

This week, atheist students at the University of Texas at San Antonio are holding their annual “Smut for Smut” campaign, in which they offer to exchange holy texts for hardcore porn, the Friendly Atheist reported. The group, Atheist Agenda, argues that the “perversion, misogyny, slavery, rape, murder” that’s chronicled in the Old Testament is worse than what’s depicted in contemporary pornography. It’s a rather attention-grabbing concept, and the atheists drew religious opponents even on their first day set up on the steps in front of a campus building with signs reading “FREE PORN” and the name of their organization.
