Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) on Monday slammed the Supreme Court for declining to hear appeals on lower court rulings that overturn same-sex marriage bans, calling the justices’ move “tragic and indefensible.” “By refusing to rule if the States can define marriage, the Supreme Court is abdicating its duty to uphold the Constitution,” he said in a statement. “The fact that the Supreme Court Justices, without providing any explanation whatsoever, have permitted lower courts to strike down so many state marriage laws is astonishing.” On Monday, the Supreme Court decided not to hear challenges to lower court rulings on same-sex marriage...

Friend- Earlier this morning, the U.S. Supreme Court announced marriage is legal for same-sex couples in Virginia. And the Fourth Circuit Court issued a mandate so that same-sex couples across the Commonwealth can be issued marriage licenses, starting right away! This is amazing news. Just days into office, I conducted a rigorous and thorough review and concluded that Virginia's marriage ban is unconstitutional. Together, we have put Virginia on the right side of history in one of the defining civil rights issues of our time. But the real heroes are the same-sex couples in Virginia and across this nation who...

The U.S. Supreme Court cleared the way Monday for legal same-sex marriages in five more states. The court refused to hear cases from the states -- Oklahoma, Utah, Virginia, Wisconsin and Indiana -- seeking to keep their same-sex marriage bans in place. Couples in some of those states began applying for marriage licenses just hours after the Supreme Court's decision. CNN affiliate WVEC in Norfolk, Virginia, captured a same-sex couple who rushed to fill out their marriage license documents. Officials in Virginia began issuing same-sex marriage licenses at 1 p.m. Monday. Tony London and Tim Bostic, two plaintiffs in Norfolk,...

Billionaire donor Paul Singer held a secret, closed doors meeting with other megadonors to promote same-sex "marriage" within the Republican Party. The Washington Blade reported that Singer and a number of wealthy donors, politicians, and the head of the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) met on Thursday to discuss how to swing the GOP in favor of redefining marriage. Relying on four anonymous sources, the Blade found that HRC president Chad Griffin, a Democratic operative, was expected to speak at the event. Prominent Republicans are expected to be in attendance, including former Bush administration Solicitor General Ted Olson, who has led...

he Supreme Court has turned away appeals from five states seeking to prohibit same-sex marriages, paving the way for an immediate expansion of gay and lesbian unions. The justices on Monday did not comment in rejecting appeals from Indiana, Oklahoma, Utah, Virginia and Wisconsin. The court's order immediately ends delays on marriage in those states. Couples in six other states should be able to get married in short order. That would make same-sex marriage legal in 30 states and the District of Columbia. But the justices have left unresolved for now the question of same-sex marriage nationwide.

A new federal program that makes free breakfast and lunch available to all students, no questions asked, has been slow to catch on in Virginia. Virginia first lady Dorothy McAuliffe has made wide acceptance of the program — known as the Community Eligibility Provision from the U.S. Department of Agriculture — a key component in her push to expand access to healthful foods to hungry Virginians. “There are 300,000 food-insecure children in Virginia, a number nobody can be comfortable with,” she said. “As a mom, to think about a hungry baby, school child, teenager, it’s very, very painful. … Food...

The Patient had traveled to Nigeria recently. That person was admitted to the hospital in stable condition and was isolated. The hospital continues to treat the patient for other illnesses. To the untrained eye, Virginia’s political scandals are beginning to become indistinguishable from one another. Reading reports last night of yet another brouhaha in the mother of states, my tired eyes struggled to place the words on the page in their appropriate context. For a brief moment at least, “McAuliffe” and “McDonnell” were one and the same; “Macca” slurred effortlessly into “Macaca”; and the cardinal sins of job-selling, gift-taking, and good old-fashioned bribery melted into a single morass, leaving me to wonder whether there is anyone left in Richmond who is on the level. Americans are accustomed to wrongdoing in...

Grandfather is fast losing his protective power. Many health plans that did not meet the requirements of the Affordable Care Act, but were spared last year by a plea from the Obama Administration to let consumers keep existing coverage, are now heading for the scrap heap, Kaiser Health News reports. The policy cancellations will affect thousands of customers who get insurance coverage from CareFirst, Kaiser Permanente, Humana and Anthem among others.A primary reason for doing away with the plans is the bottom line. The insurance industry has figured out that it can get higher premiums and make more money selling...

Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe’s chief of staff left a voice-mail message for a Democrat who was on the verge of quitting the General Assembly in June, saying that the senator’s daughter might get a top state job if he stayed to support the governor’s push to expand Medicaid, according to descriptions from three people who heard the recording. Then-Sen. Phillip P. Puckett wound up resigning, flipping control of the chamber to Republicans and thwarting McAuliffe’s signature goal of expanding health coverage under the Affordable Care Act. Puckett’s abrupt exit came amid accusations that Republicans had enticed him to leave with...

The Attorney General of Virginia recently released an opinion sure to delight rapists, sex traffickers, and pedophiles all over the state, freeing them to do more of their deeds without fear of being known. No longer do medical personnel–which includes abortion clinics–need to report suspected rape when a teenage girl is found to have an abortion. According to Virginia Attorney General Mark Herring, those reporting laws only apply if someone thinks a parent or guardian raped a girl. The opinion, which includes, “prenatal or abortion services” as possible rape indicators that no longer have to be reported to law enforcement, was...
