VALLEY FORGE, Pennsylvania A long-planned Revolutionary War museum will be built on private land after years of arguing with the U.S. government over the previous site, museum organizers said Wednesday. The American Revolution Center would be the United States' first comprehensive look at the Revolutionary War. The new site is within the boundaries of Valley Forge National Historical Park, the place where George Washington's troops waited out the winter in 1777. The museum is buying about 130 acres (52 hectares) of land for $7.1 million (€5.4 million) and hopes to begin construction on the $150 million (€114.6 million) museum in...

VALLEY FORGE -- The federal government rebuffed Gov. Ed Rendell's offer to buy back Valley Forge National Historical Park, saying it will stick with the agreement under which the state sold it the park for $1 in 1976. Rendell made the offer in December, partly in exasperation over the National Park Service's failure to approve plans for a new 100,000 square-foot museum that would tell the entire story of the American Revolution, bring together several public and private collections of documents and artifacts, create 855 jobs, and bring in $48 million in revenue for area businesses and $3.8 million in...

Maintenance complaints and obstacles to a new museum prompted his letter to the Interior Department. In 1976, the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania sold Valley Forge State Park to the federal government for $1. Now the state may want it back. Angry over inadequate maintenance and the federal government's failure to approve plans for a new museum at Valley Forge National Historical Park, Gov. Rendell wrote to Interior Secretary Gale Norton last week offering a do-over. If the United States "is unwilling or unable to protect and preserve Valley Forge... the commonwealth is prepared to accept that responsibility," Rendell wrote. "One option...

White Supremacists and Counter-Demonstrators Rally at Valley Forge Bill Bergstrom /Associated Press Writer VALLEY FORGE, Pa. (AP) - About 100 white supremacists rallied at Valley Forge National Historical Park on Saturday as nearly twice as many opponents heckled them from a nearby hillside. Both groups were outnumbered by federal law enforcement officers. National Park Service spokesman Phil Sheridan said no arrests were made at the rally site, but one person was arrested after a scuffle in a parking lot. Neo-Nazis and Ku Klux Klan members shouted slogans from a stage at the park, where about 11,000 Revolutionary War soldiers commanded...

George Washington's vision is recorded at the Library of Congress Valley Forge, the winter of 1777, American forces were fighting against the British, the most powerful nation in the world. Many believe that only 3% of the American people took part in the struggle for independence, while "Tories" gave aid and comfort to the British cause. "This afternoon, as I was sitting at this table engaged in preparing a dispatch, something seemed to disturb me. Looking up, I beheld standing opposite me a singularly beautiful female. So astonished was I, for I had given strict orders not to be disturbed,...

The task facing architect Robert A.M. Stern was daunting: design a museum to tell the story of the American Revolution but not interfere with the historic landscape at Valley Forge. Today at Valley Forge National Historical Park, Stern and his staff are set to present a design that he says does all that - plus serves as a model for a 21st-century museum, embracing the past in a structure finely attuned to the future. Gov. Rendell and historian David McCullough, along with Stern, will be on hand for the event. Officials said that groundbreaking for the $100 million project is...

    • Introduction •The images are heartrending, dramatic and so powerful that they are embedded in the nation's historical consciousness: Bloody footprints in the snow left by bootless men. Near naked soldier wrapped in thin blankets huddled around a smoky fire of green wood. The plaintive chant from the starving: "We want meat! We want meat!" These are the indelible images of suffering and endurance associated with Valley Forge in the winter of 1777-78. "An army of skeletons appeared before our eyes naked, starved, sick and discouraged," wrote New York's Gouverneur Morris of the Continental Congress. The Marquis de Lafayette wrote:...

French Ambassador's Pa. Visit Postponed By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS Filed at 12:18 p.m. ET PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- When word got out that the French ambassador was going to speak at Valley Forge this weekend to celebrate French Alliance Day, the phone at Washington Memorial Chapel started ringing off the hook. Many callers said they didn't like the French opposition to the U.S.-led war in Iraq and didn't care about the nations' trans-Atlantic friendship that dates to the Revolutionary War. So rector R. James Larsen reluctantly told French officials that the church, which is in Valley Forge National Historical Park, would...

VALLEY FORGE - With the clock ticking on an expected U.S. military strike on Iraq, thousands of people rallied in Valley Forge today to show support for American troops. The "Rally for America" - held on a field near Valley Forge National Historical Park - was the latest in a series of pro-troop rallies organized by syndicated radio host Glenn Beck. Police said this one attracted about 6,000 people, many of them waving flags and holding signs. Rally-goers sang patriotic songs and helped to raise a gigantic American flag before reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. Rick Moody, 57, and his...

Here's my report at the Rally for America at Valley Forge. My group arrived around 12pm at the Freedom Business Complex parking lots and found that there were already at least a thousand people waiting in line for the shuttle buses. At first, there was only ONE BUS moving people along, but after an hour, organizers got at least four more. The transportation organization was hideous! Glenn should have held the rally in Philadelphia, not a suburb, so that public transportation could have been put to good use. While I was waiting in line for an hour and a half...

Got back from Rally for America in Valley Forge. Planning stunk. It took an hour to get the last mile to park. Then there was 2,000-3,000 people waiting for the shuttle buses. Got on one and drove to the rally site. Bus was not permitted to unload. So we drove back to parking site. 1210 didn't even cover the event on the radio. The site had too much traffic for the roads and I assume we were turned away because of too many people. Post your comments here.

On this date in 1777, by Order of General George Washington, Tom Paine joined the battered remnants of the American Army in the cold winter at Valley Forge, and read his most recent publication, The American Crisis, to the assembled troops. These are the most powerful words ever written in America, outside the pages of her official documents, including the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution. Paine's work began thus: These are the times that try men's souls: The summer soldier and the sunshine patriot will, in this crisis, Shrink from the service of his country, but he that stands...

Dark Prospects An Army of skeletons appeared before our eyes, naked, starved, sick, discouraged. Eighteen year old Private David Clopton left the comfort of his New Kent County, Virginia home and soon found himself embroiled in a trial, not by fire, but by bitter cold and inadequate rations, for which he received 6 2/3 dollars a month for pay and subsistence.. The Continental Army commanded by General George Washington first arrived at Valley Forge, Pennsylvania on December 19, 1777. They stayed there until June 19 1778. Men from each colony were at Valley Forge, and there were regiments from 11...
