    Two 11-year-olds have been arrested on seven counts of animal cruelty in an incident earlier this month that allegedly led to the death of six newborn kittens. Metro Police officials said witnesses were alerted to what sounded like glass shattering around 5 p.m. Oct. 9. Initially witnesses thought the two juveniles were throwing rocks at an apartment building around the 9600 block of Russell Road. In reality, witnessed told authorities, the youngsters had been throwing rocks at a mother cat giving birth. The cats six kittens ultimately died.

    Beverly Hoffrichters voice is hoarse. For eight hours Hoffrichter, a cocktail waitress at the D, was picketing outside the property with her fellow Culinary Union workers as part of a massive protest outside all nine downtown casinos Saturday. Hundreds came and went in shifts during the protest, but not Hoffrichter. She stayed. Her scratchy voice was the result of hours chanting and shouting a badge of honor in the larger fight for union workers to make their voices heard. The 3,500 Culinary Union members with jobs downtown were picketing to maintain health and retirement benefits in their contracts.

New schools, parks and neighborhoods popped up seemingly overnight. Restaurants and shopping plazas overtook desert stretches, and plans were drawn for casino alley, a mini-Strip of gaming resorts. Most residents welcomed the growth. A 2009 survey found that half the population rated the quality of life in North Las Vegas as excellent or good. Three-quarters of residents said theyd recommend living in the city.
