The Washington Monument will remain closed indefinitely after yesterday's earthquake rocked much of the east coast including the nation's Capitol. The 5.8 magnitude earthquake damaged the monument by creating a four foot long crack as wide as one inch in some places at the very top of the monument. National Park service Spokesman Bill Line said that a structural engineering firm was brought in today to begin assessing the damage to the 550-foot structure. The firm will evaluate the crack and submit a report to the National Park Service outlining the problems to the structure along with recommendations for repairs....

The National Park Service has given Glenn Beck permission to hold a Tea Party rally on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial on August 28, 2010. Some Beck and Tea Party haters are angry. Aren't they always? But I digress. Forty years ago, on August 28th, Martin Luther King gave his "I have a dream speech" on the steps of the Washington Monument. The timing has caused some on the left to flip-out. Bill Press, Huffington Post blogger and liberal radio talker, is comparing giving permission for the Tea Party rally to giving al Qaeda permission to hold a rally...

Tourists take in the new landscape changes to the Washington Monument, Saturday, April 1, 2006, in Washington. The Monument reopened to the public after several months of security renovations. (AP Photo/Lawrence Jackson) WASHINGTON — In landscape architect Laurie Olin's mind, the approach to the most soaring of the capital's monuments had to be friendly and simple _ and safe. The Washington Monument stretches more than 555 feet in the air from the National Mall. But for years there was nothing grand about the asphalt walkway that led to the obelisk. And adding jersey barriers in the age of terrorism diminished...

Subject: Laus Deo Laus Deo I thought that you and others may like to see this. One detail that is not mentioned in Washington, DC, is that there can never be a building of greater height than the Washington Monument. With all the uproar about removing the ten commandments, etc... This is worth a moment or two of your time. I was not aware of this historical information. On the aluminum cap, atop the Washington Monument in Washington DC, are displayed two words: Laus Deo. No one can see these words. In fact, most visitors to the monument are totally...

"Laus Deo" - A Poem The title of this poem, Laus Deo, comes from the old Latin Mass and means "Praise be to God!" That the poet saw a divine hand in Congress's passing of the amendment abolishing slavery on January 31, 1865 -- thus putting the capstone on what had been accomplished by four long and arduous years of war -- is evident from the rich biblical imagery used throughout these verses. "Laus Deo" By John Greenleaf Whittier (1807-1892) It is done! Clang of bell and roar of gun Send the tidings up and down. How the belfries...

Dirty bomb test 'caught US police napping' US police officers failed to spot what could have been a dirty bomb planted in the heart of Washington, a report by government investigators has alleged. A suspicious package was positioned at the base of the Washington Monument, near the White House, on the second anniversary of September 11. The test was conducted at a time when the US was supposed to be on high alert against the threat of a terrorist attack. But the report alleges that police were busy chatting rather than patrolling the area and one officer positioned in an...

Ever get the feeling someone is watching you stroll along the Mall? asks Al Kamen in the Washington Post. That's because someone is -- from atop the 555-foot Washington Monument. Seems four surveillance cameras were installed there back in March to keep an eye out for terrorists and other evildoers. Where visitors once had eight windows -- two in each direction -- to survey the vista, now there are four. The cameras, likely mounted on tripods, are hidden in small plywood closets and peer out the other four. The cameras can see a long way, U.S. Park Police Chief Teresa...
