Disputes over what female Muslim athletes can wear have arisen in soccer, swimming, track, gymnastics and, most recently, weightlifting, putting the athletes in the difficult situation of having to choose between their religion and their sport. But today, a compromise was reached in weightlifting. The International Weightlifting Federation announced from Malaysia that it would modify the rules for athletic attire to allow athletes to wear a "one piece full body tight fitted 'unitard' under the compulsory weightlifting costume."

HAMILTON, CANADA – Women who drink two large glasses of milk a day after their weight-lifting routine gained more muscle and lost more fat compared to women who drank sugar-based energy drinks, a McMaster study has found. The study appears in the June issue of Medicine and Science in Sport and Exercise. "Resistance training is not a typical choice of exercise for women," says Stu Phillips, professor in the Department of Kinesiology at McMaster University. "But the health benefits of resistance training are enormous: It boosts strength, bone, muscular and metabolic health in a way that other types of exercise...

"For the 33-year-old mother of three, securing a slot on the U.S. Olympic team was the culmination of a quest that began more than a decade ago — and has been punctuated by huge disappointments, months of intractable pain caused by a herniated disk, back surgery and lessons learned from her autistic son. Despite the toll lifting has taken on her body and the pain she has endured, the former gymnast says she loves the sport. ... Roach's Olympic quest has been both complicated and enriched by her son Drew, who is autistic. Not long after Drew was diagnosed three...

LONGWOOD, Fla. -- A 15-year-old Seminole County boy died on Thursday when a barbell apparently fell on his neck while he was lifting weights alone at his home, authorities said. Elie Khoury, who attended Seminole High School, was working out in the back of his home, located at 208 Cambridge Drive in Longwood, at about 9:40 p.m. when a barbell apparently fell on top of his neck, deputies said. A Seminole County sheriff's deputy responding to a 911 call said he found Joseph Khoury, Elie's father, performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation on his son, who could not be revived. Grief counselors were...

"Cardio kills," says Jim Karas in his new book, "The Cardio-Free Diet." "Cardiovascular exercise kills a weight-loss plan, your internal organs, your immune system, your time and your motivation. If your true goal is to lose weight, interval strength training is the only way to go," says Karas, an ABC News correspondent, celebrity trainer and fitness expert. When he first tried to lose weight as a 21-year-old, Karas found that he would work up an enormous appetite after running several miles. So while his cardiovascular health improved he still wasn't losing weight. The Program He grew more interested in strength...

(CBS) WAPPINGERS FALLS, N.Y. You can lift, strain, crunch and sweat all you want at the Planet Fitness in the Dutchess County village. But whatever you do, do not grunt. Yep, "no grunting." It says so, in black and white, on a sign posted at the gym. One former member learned the new rule the hard way. "This is really absurd, especially the part about the grunting," said Al Argibay, a corrections officer who learned first-hand "no grunting" means exactly that. Argibay, a former competitive bodybuilder, joined the gym in September because it was affordable and convenient.

ATHENS -- Behroz Loroun was in the stands for the coronation and wanted something known. "You know how many eggs he eats in the morning for breakfast?" Loroun demanded. "Twenty! He eats 20 eggs in the morning!" That's another piece of humongous minutiae that makes up the resume of Hossein Rezazadeh. He has nicknames: the Iranian Hercules; the Strongest Man on Earth. He has buzz: His wedding in 2003 was televised nationally in Iran. He has star power: He competes in a seven-team professional weightlifting league in Iran, where his matches are watched by 10,000 people. He has girth: He...

ATHENS (Reuters) - There are hundreds of gold medals on offer at the Athens Olympics but only three mythical titles. The 100 metres proclaims "the world's fastest man" and the decathlon the "world's greatest athlete". But the title that may fascinate more than any other is "the world's strongest man", to be bestowed in the super-heavyweight competition before a sold-out crowd on Wednesday. Iranian Hercules, Hossein Rezazadeh, a human crane able to hoist refrigerators with the same ease mere mortals can lift a briefcase, is the defending champion. A burly 160 kg (353 lbs) bundled into a 6-ft 1-in (1.85m)...

Allow me to burden you with weightlifting facts BY DAVE BARRY ATHENS -- If you like confident women, defined as ''women who could pick up your refrigerator unassisted,'' you would love Olympic women's weightlifting. Competitive weightlifting is hugely popular in Greece. This dates back to ancient times, when the Greeks had to be very strong because pretty much all their possessions were made of marble. A single salad fork could weigh 50 pounds. Just to get through a meal you needed biceps like basketballs. Today, competitive weightlifting is not a big deal in the United States, where people mainly lift...

OLYMPIA, Wash. - This buff justice gives new meaning to the words "bench press." State Supreme Court Justice Faith Ireland won her second national powerlifting championship last weekend, grabbing a spot for herself on the USA Masters Team for world competition. On Saturday, the 61-year-old justice broke the American squat record for her age and weight with a 198-pound lift. In the deadlift, Ireland set a personal record of 253 pounds. She's proudest of her 133-pound bench press — not just because it set another national record, but because she achieved her long-standing personal goal of benching more than her...

1999 Federal Laws Governing Weightlifting in Prisons by Strength Tech, Inc. The current laws governing weightlifting in federal prisons come from the large annual appropriations bill. The bill provides the Federal Prison system with its operational budget for Oct. 1, 1998 to Sept. 30, 1999 and lists certain things (including weight lifting equipment) that budget money can not be expended for. The restrictions are commonly referred to as the Zimmer Ammendment, and they have been added to the bill for the last several years. When the restrictions first occurred, the Federal Bureau of Prisons responded with a question and...
