It's been nearly a century since scientists first theorized that the Universe was expanding, and that the farther away a galaxy was from us, the faster it appears to recede. This isn't because galaxies are physically moving away from us, but rather because the Universe is full of gravitationally-bound objects, and the fabric of space that those objects reside in is expanding. But this picture, which held sway from the 1920s onward, has been recently revised. It's been only 20 years since we first realized that this expansion was speeding up, and that as time goes on, individual galaxies will...

The Golden Globe Award nominations have been announced, and once again, the Hollywood judges really know how to find the worst junk to honor. Two nominations went to stay-classy Showtime’s program called “SMILF,” for “single mother I’d like to f—.” The show’s lead actress is also its creator and executive producer. Her name is Frankie Shaw and she says she picked this profane title as a “deliberate” feminist move to take back the sexist phrase “MILF” from “male objectification.” Try deciphering that one. Obviously, (CBS-owned) Showtime executives also designed it to nudge people to click on it because they know...

The woman who sold the freezer told her neighbor not to open it because a Sunday school class was using it as a time capsule. The truth wasn’t nearly so innocent. The woman, who asked not to be identified, told WNCN that she opened the freezer Friday, three weeks after getting it, because no one from the church came by. “A church was supposed to come, pick up the items inside the freezer. I was supposed to get the freezer back,” she said. “The church never came. I decided to open it.” Instead of a time capsule, the Goldsboro, North...
