VANITY: The Government is OUR Government - 85 years ago

I was gobsmacked as I watched the opening to the movie "Scarface" from 1932, directed by Howard Hawks, with Paul Muni in the lead.. It is about organized crime in Chicago i the 1930's era. Redone by Al Pacino in Miami in the '80s.

85 years ago the People petitioned the Govt., along with Hollywood.

I have posted the first 3 or so frames that are so astounding and prescient.

Any comments welcome.

Scarface was originally released without that prologue. Many civic groups protested the movie as "glorifying gangsters," and some cities considered banning it (cities could do that in those days). The prologue was added to defuse that opposition.

WOW. I didn’t know that. From where did you learn such an arcane fact. I believe you. I am not going to delete it from my copy, but will remember your helpful info.

One thing Hollywood got out of this was gun control.

The government is ours and won’t change if people keep voting for the same weasels.

The only way to drain the swamp is for everyone to Cantorize their weasel.

Most Americans like their weasel.

From where did you learn such an arcane fact.

A film history class in college, many years ago. There was a big fad for gangster movies in the early 30s-- "Little Caesar" with Edward G. Robinson, "The Public Enemy" with George Raft, "Scarface"-- and all were condemned by church and civic groups for glorifying gangsters and including excessive violence.

It used to be "common knowledge",re what you posted. :-)

It's also mentioned in many books about Hollywood and film in general. And is often talked about, on TCM, prior to the movie being shown, when it fits.

I am working on Harry Reid/Oscar Goodman / Jay Brown mafia connections. I can tell you it is just as bad now as in 1932 and the FBI and DOJ are worthless. Here’s a documentary you should all watch to see how crime has been ignored.
