Feedback on the new shingles vaccine? I usually lie low on medical treatment and don't go for 'the latest' treatment on much of anything. But then, I am healthy. Any feedback about this new vaccine? Side-effects? Avoid it? Go for it? Just collecting data here, thanks.
I would have paid out of pocket as well if I had to.
Shingrix approved Oct. 2017. Zostavax is older vaccine. Cost approx. $280 for 2 shots 2-6 months apart.
The shingles vaccine has a risk of adverse reactions, even a risk of getting shingles from it. Yet the vaccine remains on the market and medically recommended because the adverse risks are calculated to be considerably less than the aggregate risk and burden of getting shingles. Although not life-threatening in itself, shingles is so immiserating that in severe and protracted cases it can prompt suicide.
I am going to check on that. I have Tricare and am 56. The site shows I have to be 65, which, to me, simply means they won’t cover it and to wait til Medicare will! But, if I can get it at the pharmacy with a co-pay, I will. My husband has had shingles and the neuropathy lasted for months! He had the vaccine a few years ago. He can tell when an outbreak “tries” but it never gets bad now.
My brother just got it and no ill effects. Same with a friend. It doesn’t prevent it. It makes it less potent. I’d go for it myself. I didn’t get it and was laid low with it last summer. No one should suffer with this.

The new one has a higher effectiveness rate....and yes, there are two administrations of it. the old one one had one.
Shingrix is the new one and has only been out 6 months or so.
I got shingles in late 60’s on my buttocks and torso. The treatment of choice then was vitamin B injections which actually worked. However, while it was working the disease was a pisscutter. Could be one of those suicide type things like trigeminal neuralgia or stepping on a stonefish. Got the old shot about 2 years ago and about to get new one.
Mrs. Bonemaker got shingles on head and forehead last fall. She was not amused. She was even less amused by my mocking her for not getting the shot.

If only. No, it shows on the skin but attacks the nerve endings hence the screaming.
What gunthere said is true. I have a close friend that is Dr in pain management. They recommend that people get nerve killing surgery to stop the pain from a shingles attack. It is awful.
FWIW I had the shot three years ago with no side effects.
Shingles has more than one symptom. It does not match up with what the Admiral had in other respects.
From what I understand the answer is YES. That is why I will be getting the VAX on my next trip to VA.
