(vanity) TOURNAMENT OF CHART-TOPPERS ('60S) ROUND 1
me | 1/12/20 | me

Posted on 01/12/2020 8:29:13 AM PST by the OlLine Rebel

OK, FREEPERS, LET'S START THIS CONTEST FOR THE GREATEST SONG OF THE '60S.

The baseline for the contest is the top 7 hits of each year of the '60s, as compiled by BILLBOARD. This is NOT based on personal preferences, biases, prejudices, or counter-culture fringe-element reactivity.

Round 1 is listing candidate songs in order of preference.

(The remaining rounds are handled as play-off brackets, starting with 32 pairs of songs to compare.)

ROUND 1

We begin by using the #7 songs of each year and paring them from 10 songs to 4 (to set up play-off brackets for the rest of the contest). NO equivocating, ties, or omissions.

1960 "It's Now or Never" Elvis Presley

1961 "Pony Time" Chubby Checker

1962 "The Loco-Motion" Little Eva

1963 "Fingertips" Little Stevie Wonder

1964 "My Guy" Mary Wells

1965 "Help!" The Beatles

1966 "Monday, Monday" The Mamas & the Papas

1967 "Somethin' Stupid" Frank & Nancy Sinatra

1968 "This Guy's in Love With You" Herb Alpert

1969 "Hot Fun in the Summertime" Sly and the Family Stone

Thank you. Obviously our voting has become a trickle. But I have to wait until Sunday!

I hope I understand this correctly—only the top 4. Best to worst:

1. 1969 “Hot Fun in the Summertime” Sly and the Family Stone
2. 1966 “Monday, Monday” The Mamas & the Papas
3. 1965 “Help!” The Beatles
4. 1960 “It’s Now or Never” Elvis Presley

It’s too late for me to name my songs. Well, shitfire, I didn’t even know you started. I said I was interested but no one told when it would or had started. I demand a recount. There are a lot of songs better, much better, than the ones you listed. Makes me wonder if the nominators are musically retarded

be-baw - yes, you are the first on the ping list, so you should have seen it unless you get alot of pings! http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-bloggers/3807574/posts?page=5#5

2nd, as stated, this is purely from Billboard. There are no “nominators”, just pure stats from Billboard. And many people like them!

Sorry you missed it!

"I demand a recount."

Hillary, the election has been over for three years - and even if we count them again, you're still a loser....

I see I got it but not sure I even read it. Yeah, I get a lot of pings. I get engrossed in certain threads and either not respond or just forget to respond to some pings.

I probably saw it, probably thought I would hear more before I had to respond.

You did alert me, I didn’t respond. My bad.

Still, there are two dozen Beatles songs there are better than most of the songs on your latest list.

No Stones, No Atlantic R&B, not at all representative of the best of the 60’s.

Well the next is up now.

Again, it’s not “my” list although I happen to like alot of it. And this list is only the #7 songs. Still I think it’s a great variety as is, and My Guy is a legend from the legendary Motown (shocked neither it nor Loco-Motion made it to the next level, though they are close).

I think I’ll pass. I don’t understand the rules. I’ve not participated in your previous tournaments. Thanks for including me, though.
