(vanity) TOURNAMENT OF CHART-TOPPERS ('60S) ROUND 1
me | 1/12/20 | me

Posted on 01/12/2020 8:29:13 AM PST by the OlLine Rebel

OK, FREEPERS, LET'S START THIS CONTEST FOR THE GREATEST SONG OF THE '60S.

The baseline for the contest is the top 7 hits of each year of the '60s, as compiled by BILLBOARD. This is NOT based on personal preferences, biases, prejudices, or counter-culture fringe-element reactivity.

Round 1 is listing candidate songs in order of preference.

(The remaining rounds are handled as play-off brackets, starting with 32 pairs of songs to compare.)

ROUND 1

We begin by using the #7 songs of each year and paring them from 10 songs to 4 (to set up play-off brackets for the rest of the contest). NO equivocating, ties, or omissions.

1960 "It's Now or Never" Elvis Presley

1961 "Pony Time" Chubby Checker

1962 "The Loco-Motion" Little Eva

1963 "Fingertips" Little Stevie Wonder

1964 "My Guy" Mary Wells

1965 "Help!" The Beatles

1966 "Monday, Monday" The Mamas & the Papas

1967 "Somethin' Stupid" Frank & Nancy Sinatra

1968 "This Guy's in Love With You" Herb Alpert

1969 "Hot Fun in the Summertime" Sly and the Family Stone

Generally I leave it up to them (hoping they will show rank) but if not that, usually it is best down to worst.

I love the Grand Funk version, but it may be partly because of great memories playing in the basement with my cousins while playing our jukebox....

I love the original, too.

Check out this version. Was a #1 hit in the UK.

I’ve so overplayed all the 60’s hits from the US I’ve started to delve into some of the big hits from overseas that didn’t make it over here. Some very interesting (and in many cases, very cool) records.

This is Chris Farlowe. He also had a hit with the song Rod Stewart did - Handbags and Gladrags if you want to check further.

Which group performed before more live audiences of 10,000 and of 50,000 and of 100,000 ... in both teh 50s? 60s? 70s? 80s? and 90s?

Cliff Barrows, George Beverly Shea, The Billy Graham Evangelistic team holds all the live performance records. The record in Africa, the record in Asia, the record in Europe, the record in Latin America, the record in the US.

The only thing that comes close in competition is the annual events in Mecca.

The secular world is 3rd class on personal appearances.

When Catholics and Protestants sing the same song world wide, as they do for Christmas and Easter, Those are the all time records. In May both Catholic and Protestant will sing HOW GREAT THOU ART on the same Sunday. That is the largest non-Holiday song of all time.
