How many people die of the flu that were otherwise healthy. The media highlights this one case. The bottom line, a vast majority of people dieing with the virus have underlying health issues, in other words they were dieing with or without virus.
Psoriasis is an autoimmune disease, so the boy did indeed have a relevant underlying condition.
How does (or not) the immuno effects of psoriasis relate to susceptibility to the pulmonary effects of corona virus?
Done in my head, so off. But, if we had a number on those who havent been tested, i e non-symptomatic but infected, it would be much lower. But I was still wrong on the initial division.
Not for a couple of decades. I’m too buisy creating flat earth Youtube videos anyway. ;)
Anecdotal, I know, but a friend who works at a children’s hospital in Denver reports that there is exactly ONE coronavirus patient hospitalized at his hospital, and that patient is eighteen years old.
Well said.
This hysteria is driving me nuts.
People need to grow a pair of balls and get grip.
AAAARRRRGGGGHHH!
Germany is apparently testing more than any other nation and their mortality rate is around 0.5% if NPR is to be taken at face value.
If the 14 year old had psoriasis, it is in an indication of a compromised immune system.
“this is the second case” out of 686,000 cases. Do you know how rare it would be if NO outliers existed?
Should I add several exclamation points?
He would have had clinically significant pre-existing inflammation from an auto-immune disorder. Add to that the added burden of the virus and he probably entered into a cytokine storm with his lungs filling with fluid.
The most common underlying health issue cited among deceased Covid19 victims is high blood pressure, the second is diabetes. If you know someone with these conditions, you know they can be controlled with medication and people usually live for decades with them. Casually accepting they they are going to die immediately of Covid19 is pretty harsh.
Also the present participle for the verb “to die” is spelled “dying” not “dieing”
i believe we had 60 million swine flu cases.
You said very well my point. Thank you for putting the right terms to it.
“How does (or not) the immuno effects of psoriasis relate to susceptibility to the pulmonary effects of corona virus?”
Psoriasis is immunodysregulatory. It isn’t thought to be immunosuppressive. In fact, untreated psoriasis is thought to bolster immunity. Most effective treatments for psoriasis ARE immunosuppresive, by design. There are many current therapies, both old drugs and very modern injectable biologics. Therefore, the question remains if this boy was receiving an immunosuppressive medication for psoriasis that made him more vulnerable to the coronavirus infection and its ill-effects.
Kid had psoriasis, an autoimmune disease in which young onset patients tend to be more severe and more likely to have additional disorders of excessive inflammation. And one sometimes treated systemically with agents suppressing the immune system. It would be interesting to know how severe was his psoriasis and what treatment hed been receiving for it. It may be that instead of being a sad exception to the young and healthy do well rule of thumb that hes a clue to another risk factor.
Yes, the headline is just wrong and the article is written by someone who shouldn’t be in the business of reporting.
> WE got the filthy Chinese to Thank for this! <
Id say the filthy ChiComs, but yeah, youre right. Will the world forget this in a few years? Sure they will. And the ChiComs are banking on that.
This child may have had a genetic zinc deficiency, or deficiency caused by diet or other factors...
