Europes best-selling newspaper announced this weekend the lockdown in response to the Chinese coronavirus pandemic was a huge mistake, citing a number of public intellectuals critical of the countrys official response.
Reproducing comments from seven well-known intellectuals, Bild underscores the importance of warning, doubting, and arguing in the case of a public crisis that involves the suppression of the fundamental rights of citizens.

It Was/Is
Sick to my stomach when this Whole SHAM came down .....
“Mistake” implies lack of intent.
True. But The Bild has had some interesting pieces lately and they may just be building up to using the “I” word or a synonym.
Amazing that a German newspaper speaks up for the people while American newspapers, especially the New York Times and Washington Post continue to sell the lies of the left designed to destroy the world’s economy and freedom where it still exists.
No pun intended.
My fear is that the Rats will be able to convince a substantial percentage of “independent” voters that the deaths and the economy’s collapse is the President’s fault.
Tits on the front page, every day.
“Lockdown Was a Huge Mistake
No Obama Sherlock!
It kind of was his fault - when he appointed President Fauci to take over his job. I think he knew that the left would attack him for not shutting down and following through on his original common sense plan. Or possibly he really believed Faucis insane forecasts etc.
In any case, it was a terrible, terrible mistake. However, since the Dems were raving and screaming at him for not shutting down immediately, I think it would be hard for them to get any political advantage out of this. That said, I still think he shouldnt have done it.
Two weeks...okay. But month after month after month...no, not okay.
1/3rd of 80,000 is still a lot of deaths, but a good map.
The German press looked back on Hitler and vowed to never repeat it.
The American press looked back on Hitler and said, "Wow, that is a heck of a role model!"
Have you listen to any of the nurses who went to NYC to help? Great negligence there. Expect lawsuits. Much mismanagement caused by local politicians tell doctors what the could and couldnt do. Just do a search. Theyll pop up.
That's because Orange Man Bad trumps everything, so to speak.
Based on the article referenced below, Germany may have hesitated too long to start effective lockdown imo.
"Unlike the UK, Italy, France and Spain, Germany has stopped short of ordering a nationwide lockdown, instead opting for strict social-distancing measures, including a ban on gatherings of more than two people. Coronavirus: Could Germany become Europes first country to flatten the curve?, INDEPENDENT
In other words, instead of suggesting that Germany should have started its lockdown earlier, Orange Man Bad media is blaming lockdown possibly to discredit PDJTs lockdown.
Sheltering and cowering in place can kill you and your loved ones!:
Heather Mac Donald, the Thomas W. Smith Fellow at the Manhattan Institute, writing in the Hill:
On Wednesday, Cuomo announced the shocking news that 84 percent of all hospital admissions were either people sheltering at home or nursing home residents. He shouldnt have been surprised. The risk of coronavirus infection occurs overwhelmingly indoors. Researchers in China identified only one outdoor outbreak of infection among over a thousand cases studied.
Most transmissions occurred at home, rendering the close-down-all-businesses-and-shelter-in-place rule contraindicated.
Study reveals that vitamin D likely to reduce serious coronavirus complications:
Vitamin D is produced in the skin from UVB sunlight exposure and is transported to the liver and then the kidney where it is changed into an active hormone that increases calcium transport from food in the gut and ensures calcium is adequate to keep the skeleton strong and free of osteoporosis.
The study found that vitamin D can also support the immune system through a number of immune pathways involved in fighting SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes Covid-19.
What we have seen in the last six weeks has been excessive, Riekel adds: We have become a people of compliers and snitches.

Seems to also be the case here in the good ole U.S.A.
...independent voters...

As your quote marks suggest, at least a plurality of independents are primarily gutless leftists who are reluctant to be identified as such.
I’ve always been suspicious of equating *independents* with true swing voters.
Although, it seems quite a few voted for DJT in 2016. Then, again, I’ve also always seen POTUS as closest to Truman.
