If theres one piece of advice graduating high school seniors are probably hearing a lot of these days, its this: take a gap year.
Calls encouraging the class of 2020 to defer college for a year continue to mount amid the coronavirus pandemic and resulting lockdown.
Dear High School Seniors: Its Time To Consider A Gap Year Thanks To Covid-19, writes Eric Brotman, a financial planner, in Forbes.
Waiting a year may be the best move in order to ensure you get the traditional college freshman experience, both academically and socially, Brotman writes. Taking a gap year may not have been your original plan, but it can present you with a lot of new opportunities.
He suggested getting a job to save up some money or...

If my son was planning to enter one of the colleges in the California State University System, I would tell him to take the gap year and work full time. All 24 colleges are going to distance learning.
At this point we really don’t know what will happen in the fall. Is the NCAA going to cancelled all fall sports? If colleges go to remote learning, what happens to all the income earning opportunites for students for campus activites?
Who knows?
Some of them may actually find that learning a trade in trade school is pretty worthwhile.
I’ve heard that jobs like welders and auto mechanics can earn pretty good money if they are good. There’s a shortage of skilled laborers.
Excellent advice. If on-campuses are cancelled for next fall I hope students that are interested in ROTC or NROTC will be able to apply for three year or three and a half year scholarships
You know, this could go on for hours. Then, we would just switch to Airplane! or Animal House.
Electric Design, linemen, electricians, plumbers, HVAC...
Good money and consistent work:
Who’s going to teach them if they do go back to school this fall? Trump advises older faculty to stay home and out of the classroom. I work in a university library and have been told I should stand behind a sneeze guard like grocery store clerks do. Like that’s going to block the aerosols that are carrying the virus when infected people so much as open their mouths and talk.
The rules my university is putting together say I shouldn’t stop at any public place on my way to the university; that I should wear a clean face mask every day; that I should wash my hands repeatedly and wipe down surfaces with antiseptics, that I shouldn’t be in a office with more than a few people; that I shouldn’t stand closer than six feet from anyone, etc., etc.
Where do students eat their lunch? My university has one dining hall on campus. It’s packed with students for hours. No social distancing possible there. This just isn’t doable. Keep schools virtual until there’s a vaccine.
I took a gap year too. Having graduated from high school at 16, I worked (at McDonald’s) and saved a few thousand. Then I spent the summer of 1973 in Europe, on my own, and it was one of the high points of my life.
Good point! I expect that they could. Don’t know how existing Cadets and Midshipmen are being handled.
Enterprising students won’t take a year off, they will take courses at their local 2 year community college, save money, and work an internship for experience.
