By nature a desert cannot support a large population of animals and people. Life in a desert is sparse because the primary source of life, water, is itself sparse.

Historically populations spring up around water.

Large desert cities are a modern invention and require infrastructure to maintain an artificial human environment.

We had a deluge here in Dallas yesterday morning for about 4 hours, had to get up at 4am and turn my sprinklers off. I was afraid of flooding as there’s a creek nearby. We’re on the high ground so we’ll be the last to flood.
