China's Moon Base Bluster is Just That
National Interest ^ | 4/15/2023 | Roy Matthews

AChinese moon base sounds like the punchline of a bad conspiracy theory. But Yang Mengfei—a member of the China Aerospace and Technology Corporation (CASC)—sees it as an ambitious goal within reach of the People’s Republic of China. Despite this posturing, China is lightyears away from a moon base.

Meaningless American exceptionalism by a youngster who measures technology in printed pieces of paper.

China does have a far side of the moon lander. They do have their own GPS equivalent nav system. Russia was the only way to get astronauts to the ISS for about 10 yrs and only recently has any alternative appeared, just in time for them to move on to their own space station, and China already has one in orbit. Done alone, not with a collection of other countries.

As to diplomatic isolation, it is the US whose positions are not supported by countries representing the majority of mankind.

Measure missiles and spacecraft in numbers of missiles and spacecraft, not printed pieces of paper created whimsically spent on them.

The thermonuclear blast to dig a bunker in the crater didn't work out so good.

Most people imagine a Moon base as being buildings on the surface of the Moon. However, the practical reality is that man made tunnels accomplish a lot of goals, and avoid the “big five” problems associated with surface habitats.

That is, vacuum, hard cosmic radiation, induced surface radiation, extremes of heat and cold, and the dangerously abrasive lunar dust, not eroded by the atmosphere like it is on Earth.

In turn, this means that it makes far more sense to first send tunneling robots. They can make a tunnel on the inside of the “permanent twilight” of the wall of a Lunar crater.

They do not have to be fast, just thorough. Tunneling, periodically drilling and inserting reinforcing rod in the ceiling, as is done in modern Earth hard rock mines. Then to spray sealant on the rock against micro fissures.

As and added bonus, their spaceship would be designed to be cannibalized, modular parts with electrical connectors, and pressure doors. It would make the walls, ceiling, flooring, with the remainder being a powerful antenna to communicate with Earth.

The robots themselves would be nuclear powered and once the tunnels were completed, their reactors would provide abundant power for the base.

By the time the astronauts arrived, they would be occupied by many other things than mundane habitat creation.

But, but, the Ruzzians are MEAN PEOPLE and the Chinese have slanty eyes - no way either country could match our Drag Queen government and military.

I like the plan except for the above part, as that would require using Russia or China for the reactors, as Greenpeace would NEVER permit them to be built by the West.

Maybe you're forgetting that we had a space station "done alone, not with a collection of other countries" back in the 1970's.

Putting a robot lander on the far side of the moon is nothing compared to landing multiple rovers on Mars and keeping them running for months. There's not much interesting science to be done on the far side that can't be done on the near side.
