Don't know that I would enjoy being greeted by an 180-pound mastiff dog, but I suppose they grow on you.

My kid brother has a hyper golden retriever just a little smaller than that, but you'd better greet her (muddy paws and all) whether you like it or not. She won't take no for an answer.

Mastiff’s are fantastic dogs. The breed instinctively knows to put itself between important family members and strangers. We had a 175 lb. old English mastiff when we were kids. I distinctly remember how he would position himself between us and any new people over to the house. Until mom gave him leave, he would protect in a very non-threatening way.

I deliver mail and there’s a springer spaniel named Gibbs who I met as a puppy 14 years ago. He’s old now and the times I see him have been sporadic of late, and I have to wait for him to come if he’s outside, but when he was a pup, he’d hear me coming up the road, wait at the top of the driveway for me to stop at the mailbox, and run like the wind to get his daily dog bone. He’s the only dog on my route that preferred pats on the head before he ate his bone. I know his time is short and I will surely miss him when he’s gone.

Heaven will be full of dogs. God desires our happiness and dogs provide that in spades.

A dog’s love mirrors what our love for God is supposed to be.
