Attack On Europe: Documenting Russian Equipment Losses During The 2022 Russian Invasion Of Ukraine

This list only includes destroyed vehicles and equipment of which photo or videographic evidence is available. Therefore, the amount of equipment destroyed is significantly higher than recorded here. Loitering munitions, drones used as unmanned bait, civilian vehicles and derelict equipment are not included in this list. All possible effort has gone into avoiding duplicate entries and discerning the status of equipment between captured or abandoned. Many of the entries listed as 'abandoned' will likely end up captured or destroyed. Similarly, some of the captured equipment might be destroyed if it can't be recovered. When a vehicle is captured and then lost in service with its new owners, it is only added as a loss of the original operator to avoid double listings. When the origin of a piece of equipment can't be established, it's not included in the list. The Soviet flag is used when the equipment in question was produced prior to 1991. This list is constantly updated as additional footage becomes available.

warning for Putin-loving trolls:

Kremlin snuff box
Russians’ homes will be checked for Putin’s portrait

Russia will launch the “Putin in Every Family” program, under which residents will be given portraits of the president. It is expected that the program will be implemented before February next year, just before the elections .

The Presidential Administration decided to initiate this procedure from the bottom in order to control which of the governors would be the first to respond to this idea and be able to successfully implement it.

Local authorities should not only issue, but also selectively monitor the presence of portraits in the homes of Russians in a visible place under cameras.

There is an insider that those who already have a portrait of Vladimir Vladimirovich hanging at home at the time of issue should be encouraged.

In any case, governors are recommended to compile lists of especially patriotic citizens.

By the way, the Administration has already come up with criteria and a scale for assessing the effectiveness of governors.

It is also noted that those who refuse to take the state-issued portrait of our leader will be included in a separate list.

They say that these lists will be handed over either to the military registration and enlistment offices or to the FSB.

The issuance process itself will be subject to special control.

“God forbid, at least one portrait will be found in a landfill,” threatened a source in the FSB, who told us about the upcoming program.

More than one portrait is better. Better get them up quickly!!

“Its a 10 year war.”

...started in 2014.

Math will have its day. The money and the equipment are on track to drop below the level needed for Russia to sustain the current OpTempo next year - provided that the West keeps supporting Ukraine.

Looks like a missile raid on Sevastopol occurred, preceded by suppression of Russian Air Defenses. Doesn’t seem to be much destroyed to crow about, beyond an S-300. Anyone heard of any other significant damage? Have Russian defenses adapted?

Ukraine Says Its Day of Combined Attacks Damaged Russian Strategic Air Defense Facility in Crimea

Beginning in the early morning of Oct. 30, Ukraine struck at a Russian air defense system on the Black Sea in occupied Crimea with further attacks on the peninsula continuing into daylight hours. (https://www.kyivpost.com/post/23458 )

“According to the independent Russian-language, Lviv-based media Astra, the missile attack was on Oct. 30 at 3 a.m. near the village of Olenivka (Central West Coast of Crimea, reportedly knocking out an S-300 Air Defense system)...

...The Russian-appointed Sevastopol head occupation official Mikhail Razvozhayev said that at about 3 a.m., according to preliminary data, Black Sea Fleet ships were firing at seaborne drones.

Later, at 7 a.m., Razvozhayev said that Russian troops were using “camouflage smoke” equipment.”

And reported today (https://www.kyivpost.com/post/23508 ):

Ukraine Confirms Combined Air-Sea Attack Took Out Key Russian Air Defense System

Kremlin claims that Ukraine’s attack against Crimea on Monday failed with all incoming missiles shot down have been contradicted by Kyiv and other commentators.

“Spokesman for Ukraine’s naval operations, Dmitry Peltenchuk, said the strikes had targeted Russian air defense systems over “a large area” in Crimea and confirmed that key elements of that equipment had been damaged...

...Peltenchuk’s comments were the first official Kyiv comments on widespread reports in Ukrainian and Russian media on Monday that Ukrainian missiles had hit a Russian long-range S-300 anti-aircraft missile system air defense facility near the city of Yevpatoriya, on the west coast of the peninsula, putting it out of action (some Russian sources claimed ATACMS was used)...

...Crimea-based social media on Tuesday widely reported multiple missiles flying over Sevastopol on Monday, without being visibly intercepted, followed by at least four heavy explosions from the direction of the military port. Some locally-recorded images showed almost horizontal missile contrails overhead. Other accounts reported explosions and black smoke in the vicinity of Sevastopol’s military port with Russian military aircraft having been scrambled from the nearby Belbek airfield, apparently in an attempt to avoid incoming Ukrainian weapons.

Krym.Realii, a pro-Kiv military information platform, reported at least one Ukrainian missile had detonated close to machine shops and naval stores warehouses at the Sevastopol port, the main maintenance facility for Russia’s Black Sea Fleet.”

What happens when Russia loses its relative advantage in heavy firepower from Artillery, Armor and Air? Armed mobs, driven like cattle into the kill zones. A very Genghis Khan approach to depleting enemy ammunition.

Kyiv Post Reports:

“Operations: Avdiivka

Colonel Oleksandr Shtupun, spokesman for Ukraine’s Tavariisk Group of Forces, said on Monday that Russian forces in Avdiivka area are preparing to use “meat assaults” from Storm-Z units to attack AFU troops without backup artillery, the ISW reported.

“Meat assaults” are the term used for infantry attacks, generally using prisoner conscripts, to attack mostly on foot so as not to alert the Ukrainian defenders as to their position, as could be the case with artillery attacks and heavy machinery...

...Another Russian blogger claimed that Storm-Z assault detachments, on average, lose between 40-70 percent of their personnel. A lot of that, the Russian blogger wrote, is due to the difficulty of retrieving the wounded in such attacks, and the fact that these missions are usually carried out without much reconnaissance beforehand. The ISW has frequently stated that such attacks by Storm-Z units are typically ineffective.”

Russia is having some success with glide bombs. It sounds like the Russians are committing more of their Su-34, Su-30, and Su-35 aircraft to the fight, to deliver them. Perhaps compensating for reduced numbers and range for their CAS aircraft, as they are attritted and driven further back for basing. Or maybe it is just exploiting this new (JDAM-like) capability that they have available.

ISW reports:

“A Russian milblogger claimed that Russian forces are beginning to use several new “smart” glide bombs – the FAB-250, FAB-500, and FAB-1500 (old bombs, with new glide kits).

The milblogger claimed that the new glide bombs have laser and satellite guidance, making the accuracy of their impact radius as small as 5 meters, compared to conventional air bombs with an accurate impact radius of 50 meters. The bombs reportedly have a strike range of 200 kilometers.

The milblogger claimed that Russian FAB-250 bombs weigh 250 kilograms, hold an explosive weight of 99 kilograms, have a damage radius of 120 meters, and can destroy manpower, equipment, and light fortifications.

Russian FAB-500 bombs reportedly weigh 500 kilograms, hold an explosive weight of 150 kilograms, have a damage radius of 250 meters, and can destroy headquarters, warehouses, and concrete and reinforced concrete objects.

Russian FAB-1500 bombs weigh 1550 kilograms, hold an explosive weight of 675 kilograms, have a damage radius of 500 meters, and can destroy underground bunkers up to 20 meters in depth and penetrate up to 3 meters of reinforced concrete.

The milblogger claimed that Russian forces can arm Su-34, Su-30, and Su-35 aircraft with the new glide bombs.”

“Russia appears to have withdrawn all its units from the territory of Belarus”

What is up with Belarus and Russia?

Lukashenko hedging his bets as he sees the clock run out on Russian resources (or Putin’s survival in office)?

Russia can’t afford to rent friends anymore?

Russia having to pull everyone from everywhere else to maintain the effort in the Ukraine?

The Kyiv Independent reports today:

“Russia appears to have withdrawn “all its units from the territory of Belarus,” Andriy Demchenko, the spokesperson of Ukraine’s State Border Guard Service, said on air on Oct. 31.

The units were withdrawn “as part of a rotation,” but new units were not brought in.

There are still some members of the Russian armed forces remaining in Belarus, but these are predominantly military personnel who service Russian equipment left the country, Demchenko said.

While the border guard is “actively monitoring” the area, the situation on the border is “fully under control” with no evidence that personnel or equipment are being moved toward Ukraine...

There are also currently “less than a thousand” Russian mercenaries in Belarus, Demchenko said...

...Wagner Group mercenaries, who were reportedly already leaving Belarus due to low pay, began to leave the country in convoys following news of Prigozhin’s death, according to Ukraine’s National Resistance Center.

Roughly 8,000 Wagner fighters were stationed in Belarus (at their height), and around 500 of these men have now returned to fight in Ukraine, the Ukrainian military believes.”

The new glide bombs are comparable to JDAM-ER.

The satellite guidance would be GPS only, not GPS aided INS.

The bombs reportedly have a strike range of 200 kilometers.

B.S. Max range would be similar to JDAM-ER (72km).

Maybe we will see more Su-30, Su-34 and Su-35 losses occurring, if they are sent in more frequently on strike missions, with the glide bombs.

I have heard of the increased glide bomb use, but not much of those jets getting hit.

How many times do we have to say? No Smoking!

"An explosion occurred at one of Russia's largest military plants in the Perm Krai (2,000 km from Ukraine), Russian state-run news agency RIA Novosti reported on Oct. 31, citing emergency services.

The Ural factory, located in the town of Solikamsk, produces explosives for ammunition and small arms, among other things."

Targeting ruzzian long range surface-to-air systems (S-300 and S-400) systems is an excellent use of the ATACMs.

These are being used as "early warning" radars for the short range surface-to-air systems.

My guess these could only be successfully engaged by Patriots.

IMHO, the next Patriot battery should be forward deployed.

SU-30

SU-34

SU-35
