New York has a Democrat governor who is sure fire to appoint a Democrat in his place. The slim Republican majority will be diminished even further. Santos himself has still not been convicted of anything.
“New York has a Democrat governor who is sure fire to appoint a Democrat in his place.”
That will not happen.
Governors can’t appoint House Representatives, only Senators.
According to the U.S. Constitution, Article I, Section 2, Clause 4, when vacancies happen in the Representation from any State, the Executive Authority thereof shall issue Writs of Election to fill such Vacancies. The governor of the state where the vacancy occurs must call for a special election to elect a new representative.
She can't. The House Clerk (an appointed, non-partisan position) will fill in until Hochul can convene a special election for Santos' congressional district.
