They have already neen convicted of or pked guilty to several crimes. If SCOTUS vacates some of the convictions, the judge merely wants to rearrange the punishments for the remaining crimes, e.g. making concurrent sentences instead run consecutively.

Seems to me the judge shouldn’t be able to do that.

The crime doesn’t matter to the judge. He has in his mind what the sentence is. Even if it is just jay walking. He should not be a judge. He isn’t qualified to be a dog catcher either.
