Better known as a statesman and an inventor, Benjamin Franklin is the man to whom we refer. "Patriot" has more of a heroic connotation, but when you read this, you'll realize that he was indeed a patriot.

Franklin spent much of his life in England and was well-respected there. Beginning in 1762, he worked there to mediate the increasing disputes developing between the homeland and the colonies. Prior to the outbreak of the Revolutionary War, two of England's most distinguished persons, Admiral Lord Howe and (Prime Minister) Frederick Lord North, attempted to coerce Franklin to mediate the situation in England's favor. The offer was for "any reward in the power of government to bestow," meaning Ben could have written his own ticket.

But old Ben, on enemy turf, at the hands of powerful men, and knowing that his son was a loyalist, rejected the offer. Believing that war was inevitable, he returned to America in 1775. Had Franklin not been such a respected gentleman, he might never have been allowed to leave England. History tells us he was right about the revolution, as well as which side would prevail.
