If CO2 is such a powerful greenhouse gas, why has Mars, with an atmosphere of 95% CO2 not warmed any more than earth, with it's .3% CO2? With the Martian polar ice caps melting, that should pump even more CO2 into the atmosphere, resulting in even more warming. That it's not happening says to me that CO2 ain't all it's cracked up to be as a global greenhouse gas.
Without energy from the sun, the temperature of earth would be a few degrees north of absolute zero, so to say the sun has no influence over global warming is absurd.
"The mechanism at work on Mars appears, however, to be different from that on Earth." Well, duh! The two planets are totally different. What they do have in common is the warming energy from the sun.
I think the fact that both planets are showing basically the same temperature increase in spite of their huge climatic and atmospheric differences points to the sun as the major culprit here.
Measurements made in 1976 by the Viking landers established the exact composition of the atmosphere on Mars as 95.3% carbon dioxide, 2.7% nitrogen, and 1.6% argon, with smaller amounts of oxygen (0.15%) and water vapor (0.03%).

Mars is farther from the Sun than the Earth. Much less radiation reaches Mars. GW wackos don’t want us to know this.
Water vapor in the martian atmosphere would make a huge difference.
Mars does not have the mass to maintain it’s atmosphere.
I see the folly in your thinking: OBVIOUSLY the mars landers are made by Chevrolet, and have single-handedly pollluted the atmosphere of Mars. And if you recall, Mars lacks the AlGore, which means nothing is keeping it from spiralling out of control.
Thou blaspheme! Fall to your knees and beg the forgiveness of the Great and Powerful GORICAL.
It escapes into space.
Mars doesn’t have The Eeeeeevil George W. Bush.
Wow! I can see Al Gore on Mars selling carbon credits to the little green men. I wonder how they deal with con men? Here we give ‘em an Oscar and a Nobel Prize.
And they carefully ignore that all mammals, (animals and man) exhale CO2 constantly. Yet earth’s air is .3% CO2? Looks like the greenhouse ain’t green enough Ethyl.
Hmm. Interesting article. I didn’t know about the presence of methane. Raises some intriguing possibilities.

Tragedy! Where did all that CO2 on Mars come from? There must have been some civilization there that burned fossil fuels, caused global warming and destroyed their planet. Oh the martianity!
Hubba Hubba! Thanx for the headz-up!
I’m going to start selling Carbon Credits from Mars on ebay right away.
Maybe not, but micheal moore does. Is he warming?
bttt
Pay no attention to that man!
Probably it’s because the climate modeler’s partial differential equations had the wrong boundary values. There’s a paper, reported in another thread on FR, by a Hungarian climate modeler that corrected the error in the boundary value term, got complete agreement with Earth data, and then as a test, got complete agreement with Martian data, for the past few decades (which the AGW folk don’t get w/o putting in bells and whistles to fix the model).
Of course with the correct boundary value, it turns out there is a negative feedback mechanism that prevents a runaway greenhouse effect.
Well, lets see, it looks like Mars gets about 42% of the sun’s energy that that earth does per square meter (93 * 93) / (143 * 143) = 0.422954668
And it has much less atmosphere
But the average temperature on Mars is 227 degrees K compared to 287 degrees k on Earth.. So something is keeping Mars warmer than it would seem it should be.
