Orange Juice's 'Secret Ingredient' Worries Some Health-Minded Moms
ABC News ^ | December 16, 2011 | Susan Donaldson James

Posted on 12/17/2011 6:14:19 PM PST by decimon

Natalya Murakhver, a New York food writer and mother of an 18-month year old daughter, loved her premium brand orange juice -- the "100 percent pure" and "not from concentrate" kind that comes in the colorful carton and tastes consistently delicious.

That is, until she said she learned from her first-time moms group that there's a "secret ingredient" in all premium orange juices that companies are not required to put on their labeling.

Now, after writing Whole Foods, she refuses to buy her favorite, "365" juice, amid uncertainty about its contents.

"One of the moms said she had read about [how the juice is made] and they held it in tanks for up to a year and it pretty much lost all of its flavor and had to be reinvigorated with these flavor packs, which are essentially chemicals," said Murakhver, 40, and co-author of "They Eat What?: A Cultural Encyclopedia of Weird and Exotic Food from around the World."

For the last 30 years, the citrus industry has used flavor packs to process what the Food and Drug Administration identifies as "pasteurized" orange juice. That includes top brands such as Tropicana, Minute Maid, Simply Orange and Florida Natural, among others.

Murakhver said the addition of the flavor packs long after orange juice is stored actually makes those premium juices more like a concentrate, and consumers need to know that.

The Alar scare was done for the benefit of the Natural Resources Defense Council.

Fenton was also responsible for the dairy hormone scare which benefitted Ben & Jerry's. Fenton's junk science advocacy worked on behalf of Environmental Media Services which includes such familiar brands as Whole Foods Markets, Kashi Cereal company, Green Mountain coffee and a magazine publisher who promotes organic gardening.

The top doggie at Fenton Co. is David Fenton, who used to be a photojournalist- if he can be called that- of the Weather Underground terrorist group and Liberation News Service. One of Fenton's consultants was an Al Gore staffer. Fenton was also brought in by John Kerry to slime the Swift Boat vets.

Thank you for pointing out what should be obvious.

What a ridiculous thread.

To be sure you are getting real honey with what should be in it, find an aviary that sells to the general public- that in the store is flavored and that is all that can be said for it.There is a very good article in the January/February 2012 issue of Countryside & Small Stock Journal about honey and how to buy what you think you are getting.

It comes from the sky?!?

Isn’t that the same place that has the only unlicensed, unshielded, and unguarded fusion reactor in the local area. You know, the one pouring out untold ergs of harmful radiation onto our poor, defenseless children.

Heck, just look at how many people end up dyng from cancer because of it!

I also heard that you will go blind just looking at it, too!

Aviary? Birds make honey?

Aviary -—> Apiary.

I’m thinking this is just a little more social engineering by those who want to control us all. We all know that the whole fruit is better for you because you get fiber with your natural sugar but juice is still good for you.

Just look into what DOUGH CONDITIONER really is.

THe labeling allows them to say "dough conditioner", but it does not require them to tell you what it is ~ even if it's mostly wallboard or cement.

Buy local from a farm stand. I think what I buy is called unfiltered and it is from bees in our area. My husband uses it to prevent allergies and I’m pretty sure it works because he hasn’t used his inhaler in years.

OK. I did quick Google search, and looked at the ingredients list for the first dough conditioner I found. I will paste it below:

Ingredients: Wheat Flour, Mono-Diglycerides, Calcium Sulfate, Dextrose, Tricalcium Phosphate, Ascorbic Acid, Salt, L-Cysteine, & Enzymes.

I don't see cement or wallboard listed.

Johns-Hopkins’ The Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center:

While rebutting a hoax e-mail about cancer: “The premise is that cancer cells feed on certain foods, and if a person refrains from eating these foods, the cancer will die. According to our experts, a poor diet and obesity associated with a poor diet is a risk factor for the development of cancer. However, there is no evidence that certain foods alter the environment of an existing cancer, at the cellular level, and cause it to either die or grow.”

Nah, you can’t go blind from that, that’s the OTHER thing you go blind for.
I live in Seattle, and so I KNOW about dihydrogen monoxide first hand. It’s all over the place!
About that Fusion reactor... We in Seattle have heard rumors of such a thing, but we have yet to experience it firsthand... except those who vacation in Hawaii, or do spring break in Phoenix with the Mariners.

Really Raw Honey is sold at Whole Foods.

From the website:

Really Raw® Honey is totally unprocessed honey. It still contains pollen, propolis, honeycomb and live enzymes -- all the goodness the bees put in! That's why Really Raw® Honey is creamy, smooth and spreadable with sweet and crunchy cappings. Really Raw® Honey is gathered from fields of wildflowers planted by nature.

I knew people who were working on making orange juice that tasted like freshly squeezed.

What they discovered was that Americans did not want that taste, no matter what they said. Accustomed to the 'cooked' flavor in several major brands, they did not appreciate the painstakingly achieved 'fresh-squeezed' flavor at all.

A lot of effort and money went into this project. The company got out of the orange juice game.

Wait till these people find out that almost all apple juice comes from China...

The ABC website also has an article about apple juice and arsenic. I watched it and no mention of where the apple juice comes from at all.

However, if they had simply looked at the apple juice carton (such as Motts) they would see the apples come from places such as China and South America. Interesting how the whole video report on oranges didn't mention that either, other than a passing mention of one country - Brazil.

“Calcium sulfate is gypsum is wallboard.”

No.

Wallboard is made from Gypsum (calcium sulfate).

Wallboard contains (Mostly) calcium sulfate.

Calcium sulfate is not wallboard.

Dough conditioner contains calcium sulfate.

Calcium sulfate is not dough conditioner.

Dough conditioner is not made of wallboard.

Calcium Sulfate/Gypsum is an ingredient of wallboard.
In other news, steel is made of iron, so steel is an ingredient of bread.
