The Neandertal Enigma
by James Shreeve
in local libraries
"Frayer's own reading of the record reveals a number of overlooked traits that clearly and specifically link the Neandertals to the Cro-Magnons. One such trait is the shape of the opening of the nerve canal in the lower jaw, a spot where dentists often give a pain-blocking injection. In many Neandertal, the upper portion of the opening is covered by a broad bony ridge, a curious feature also carried by a significant number of Cro-Magnons. But none of the alleged 'ancestors of us all' fossils from Africa have it, and it is extremely rare in modern people outside Europe." [pp 126-127]

Thanks EA. Y’know, I thanked Ernest, which means I pasted the wrong ping message into this topic. Ooops.

"Neanderthal Valley" is redundant, in the sense that the German word
Neanderthal means "Neander Valley."
But then again, I refer to New Mexico as Nueva Nueva España.

“They wandered in the fields”....sounds like the first baseball team I coached. The Shortstop would come up and talk to the pitcher. The First Baseman was chasing butterflies. The Second and Third Basemen were building sand castles.

It's an old habit in Spain. The Romans called the city now known as Cartagena Carthago Nova. New Carthage. But "Carthago" means "New City" so Carthago Nova is "New New City."
Too bad the Spanish conquistadores did not name the city in Colombia "Nueva Cartagena."

(I'm being serious here)
Cave dwelling is a long tradition in Spain. In the city of Granada, and perhaps a few others, there are still people living, by choice, in caves that contain the amenities of modern life.
It is even a 'tourist' attraction in some areas.
I do doubt these people are 'Neanderthalian' in their lineage.
(yes, I just made that word up)

The Lozoya River Valley, in the Madrid mountain range of Guadarrama, could easily be called "Neanderthal Valley,"

sidebar: That “Babylon 5” hairstyle is somewhat new — that guy was coiffed normally when he appeared in that “Is There A Stargate?” extra feature on the DVD release of the movie “Stargate”.
