KOI-351 is “the first system with a significant number of planets (not just two or three, where random fluctuations can play a role) that shows a clear hierarchy like the solar system — with small, probably rocky, planets in the interior and gas giants in the (exterior),” Dr. Juan Cabrera, of the Institute of Planetary Research at the German Aerospace Center, told Universe Today.

It isn’t exactly the same. The goldilocks zone seems to be inhabited by gas giants. But there is no reason to think that life prefers rocky planets over gas giants.

The two gas giants in the new system seem to be more or less the same sort of distance out from their star as Earth is. Finding rocky/inhabitable planets in the habitable zone of a main sequence star appears to be rare in our galaxy. More normal is either rocky planets orbiting a dwarf star inside the heliosphere of the dwarf star, or inhabitable worlds existing as moons of a gas giant in the habitable zone of a main sequence star, as per the Ganymede hypothesis.

The gas giants in our solar system have a huge number and variety of moons. With gas giants in the goldilocks zone they may have moons that could harbor life.

If that star is identical to our own (i.e. similar mass and heat) then the rocky planets would be real infernos. On the other hand, I wonder how they could remain in stable orbit that close to the star if it had the same mass as ours. So it makes me wonder if this is a much smaller star with corresponding reduction in mass/heat generated. Perhaps the zone is not in the same place for that star.

If we did find a planet capable of sustaining life somewhere in the galaxy, how would we get there?

I think we are stuck on Earth for the foreseeable future, no matter what we discover through our telescopes. This means I must continue to share a planet with people that I am not particularly fond of.
