At least 50 scalded in the US after trying boiling-to-frozen water trick (article and video)

A trick where boiling water is thrown in the air to instantly turn into snow in the bitingly cold US weather became a viral hit this week, as metereologists and TV reporters illustrated just how freezing it is in the polar vortex.

But now it seems Americans are feeling the backlash of the stunt after trying it themselves in the -30 degree weather.

The LA Times found that at least 50 people on social media complained that they or their friends were scalded by hot water on Monday and Tuesday. Others have posted photos of their injuries on Instagram, and some have even mentioned visits to Accident and Emergency to receive treatment for their burns. St Louis Children's Hospital in Missouri said on Tuesday it had treated two children for burns after trying the trick.

One person tweeted: “I just threw a pot of boiling water into the air to see if it would freeze and all I did was burn myself #Floridaproblems”.

Another wrote: “So my brother decides to be cool and throw boiling water in the air and watch it freeze and ends up in the hospital with a 3rd degree burn.”

And they weren’t alone, with another saying: “While attempting to freeze boiling water, I managed to burn myself with the water instead of it freezing #fail”

Some said the boiling water had blown back on to them in the wind.

Kirsty Pembleton from Oaktown tweeted a picture of a sore looking burn on her hand, adding: “So we tried to do one of those boiling water videos we have seen all day and we ended up at the ER”.

Matt Pearce, the reporter from the LA Times who collated the tweets, said: “I think we’ve all learned a very important lesson today.”

You don’t urinate into the wind, either, if you are a fellow and have any common sense. Amazing.....simply amazing.

Interesting, that is a speech habit I don't even notice. It is very common in the California dialect I grew up with, and I'm pretty sure it is common in Maryland where I now live, too. It also is not new.

Is the use of the word "so" to begin sentences not a feature of your dialect?

So my brother decides to be cool and throw boiling water in the air and watch it freeze and ends up in the hospital with a 3rd degree burn.

If that doesn't prove anthropogenic global warming, nothing ever will.

My humble prediction for the coming year:

Boiling water can cause serious injury. The government, once aware of this fact, will take action to ban boiling water. It will receive bi-partisan support in Congress.

There is a science fiction series written by Terry Goodkind called “The Sword of Truth”

In the first book the enemy manipulates the people to outlaw fire as fire causes people to suffer burns.

I highly recommend the series. The author paints conservtive values (freedom, capitalism etc) in a positive light and manages to expose the end result of liberalism, all while staying within the story line. If you like long stories, this one is a keeper for you. Multiple volumes (10?) each baout 500 pages in paperback.

Dumb asses! If those scalded people are too damn dumb to realize the consequences of their own stupidity, I have no sympathy for them unless of course they are Eskimo’s and live were it is even tough to get water to boil.

Some people never learn. You don’t spit into the wind.

Actually, you DO spit into the wind. The term originally applied to sailors preparing to throw a bucket of "slop" over the side of a ship underway. Due to turbulence, it is sometimes difficult to know "which way the wind is blowing" over the side of the ship. On deck the wind can be at your back, but as the airflow rolls over the side it may create an updraft.

If one DOES spit first, even when the air flow seems favorable, and gets it back in his face, he is forewarned NOT to throw the bucket of ut slop. The same issue sometimes applies in high rise buildings.

One's own spit on the face is infinitely better than a bucket of slop ALL over!
