Another View -- Karl Zahn: OK, I admit it. I like Trump
New Hampshire Union Leader ^ | June 07. 2015 7:53PM | KARL ZAHN

I suspected I was just fatigued — long work days, lots of softball games with the kids — but the next day I thought I heard that Rick Santorum was announcing a run for the presidency. Then I noticed Gov. Mike Huckabee resigning from his popular Fox News show. That could only mean one thing. According to Greg Gutfeld during the first episode of his new show on Fox, “Bacon” had announced that it, too, was running for President in 2016.

I love bacon. And Gov. Huckabee and Rick Santorum are both fine men. However, in my opinion, they are to the 2016 presidential race what tacos are to leftovers. Things that don’t reheat well.

As someone who worked tirelessly for Sen. John McCain during his failed bid against Barack Obama, and someone who rode the “Straight Talk Express” and savored every drop of “straight talk” until it evanesced just before the debates began, I was ready to curl myself neatly into the fetal position and weather out the next year and a half of campaigning, polling, “gotcha” journalism and, most importantly, the blow-by-blow on Hillary’s snore of a campaign.

I had acquiesced to the obvious loss facing my party. I’m not even sure if I have a party, in fact. Indeed, that may be the problem with our party. A severe identity crisis.

I knew I was vulnerable to being swept away by some “outsider.” I felt like a shy girl from the Netherlands navigating Boston’s bar scene. With that self-assessment in mind, I was cautious when I began to have political lust for... gulp... Donald Trump.

I understand. Huge ego. He knows that, and to my admiration he recognized it and was able to be self-deprecating about it. That recognition was huge to me.

He was also affable, and funny. He is not Reagan in terms of his prowess with the language and the emotions of a crowd, but as with Chris Christie, that rough edge, the unabashed conviction, is refreshing beyond description in this age of hyper-caution on the campaign trail. Indeed, it has become accepted, and Hillary is proving it. Like Obama, one can endure an entire presidential campaign without ever answering an unscripted question. It sounds ridiculous and counterintuitive to what we, especially in New Hampshire, expect a campaign to be. But there it is.

Look, I know this seems absurd to some, but I rather like the notion of a businessman, a non-politician, taking the helm. I don’t believe the desire to be President is ego-driven, though I’m sure Mr. Trump would love the trappings of the job. He doesn’t need it, though, because he already has it.

As he pointed out in Nashua, to laughs from the crowd, he had better places to be than in New Hampshire feeding a bunch of strangers on a beautiful Saturday morning. I can’t argue that. I also can’t argue that I was glad he made the choice to be in Nashua.

If we can’t save the country, let’s at least go out swinging, and I liked what I heard on that particular day. We are running out of time. I’m glad Trump, at least, gets that.

This seems like a good article.

I posted more of the original than I usually do, but there is still more. Please click on the link for the original.

If we can't save the country, let's at least go out swing...

I'm reaching that point. Trump with an equally amusing VP choice would be entertaining.

Trump is unabashed, in his support for America.

How refreshing.

We will know, in just over one week.

Another plus is that Trump most probably can’t be bought off or maneuvered into having others define him.

Gotta be Biden. He's a natural. Proven. Never at a loss for words. Knows where the bathroom is.

I like him, too.

246 days to make up my mind. If he can manage not to implode before then, I’ll consider voting for him.

If you came of age in NYC in the 1970s, as I did, the name “Trump” was kind of a punch line to a bad joke. He failed spectacularly, had huge bankruptcies and other real estate/zoning/permitting messes.

But, you know what? He was relentless, did not quit, refused to take (many) noes for an answer, and now he’s a big deal.

If he’s serious about China and the fence, I could get on board.

Do you mean like Ted Cruz in the last three weeks? Or as Scott Walker in his new pay to play dealings? If a person has any government back ground they are dirty and have taken money and gifts. You can call it funds to run but it is really just payment for future deals.

From McCain to Trump, a logical progression for the writer. Next up, Lincoln Chaffee.

Just a friendly reminder.

McCain’s Vice Presidential candidate was Sarah Palin.

I'm beginning to think that way, too. To be chosen by the "in crowd" in either party for anything beyond local dog warden, a candidate has to be compliant. Maybe some get past the machine and into the HOR, but very few seem to keep their head above water when they get to DC. DC is an integrity-sucking machine.

Cruz lost me when he held up the US Senate end of things to pass the Obama trade bill. And his supporting MORE H1B Visas? What world is he living in?

Just a friendly reminder. McCain’s Vice Presidential candidate was Sarah Palin.

Yes, and according to the author, he was enthusiastically a rider on McCain's "Straight Talk Express" but he curled into the fetal position and had to endure the remainder of the campaign at just about the time Palin was selected as his running mate.

I know his type. Trump's the perfect candidate for him.

Oh.

That’s an interesting observation.

Thanks. I take your post under advisement. In the meantime, who else in the party (or anywhere) is really gearing up to be, for focusing on America first?

Who is all for rebuilding the United States of America?

I don’t see anyone else.

I like Trump and Fiorina for what they bring to the conversation. They see things from a business perspective as opposed to a lawyer/career politician. In the end, I do think it will take a politician to win though. I'm liking Walker and Cruz at this point in the race.

Well I think Trump is right when he says the politicians are not gonna get you to the promised land. They just have to pander to too many people to raise enough money to run for President. That’s why nothing ever changes. Once these guys are beholden they cannot ever make a tough decision.

Mr. GG2 and I are taking ten steps back and are watching what happens as we are very unhappy with the way the republicans are voting for the most part. If Trump announces on the 16th which I believe he will then we may well back him.

I want Trump to Run—he would be good for the debates. I may not agree with all he believes but a Trump/Palin ticket I could get behind.
