6 Most Powerful Armies of All Time
National Interest ^ | July 8, 2015 | Zachary Keck and Akhilesh Pillalamarri

In an anarchical system like international relations, military power is the ultimate form of currency. A state may have all the culture, art, philosophy, and glitter and glory in the world, but it’s all for naught if the country doesn’t have a powerful military to defend itself. Mao Zedong put it bluntly when he stated: “power grows out of the barrel of a gun.” Of all the types of military power, armies are arguably the most important for the simple fact that people live on land, and are likely to continue doing so in the future. As the famous political scientist John J. Mearsheimer has noted: “Armies, along with their supporting air and naval forces, are the paramount form of military power in the modern world.”

Good morning.

Red Cloud is the only military leader to force the US government to sue for peace.

What about chief Oseola (Seminoles)? The U.S. govt. sued for a peace treaty (still in effect).

Maybe I missed something?

Honestly, it’s all relative. Imagine what even the most rudimentary modern army could do to the Mongols or even Napoleon’s army of their day.

Not my take on Osceola. He was in custody before the hostilities ended, and that only took place after the government got tired of pumping money and troops into Florida and the Seminoles basically agreed to stick to the Everglades. The government never sued for peace.

The government never sued for peace.

You're right. I forgot, there still is a state of war that exists.

There is no state of war between the US and the Seminoles.

Technically there is. There is no peace treaty between the U.S. govt and the Seminole tribe.

As the historian Andrew Roberts has observed, “soldier for soldier the German fighting man and his generals outperformed Britons, Americans and Russians both offensively and defensively by a significant factor virtually throughout the Second World War.”

We won, they lost.

There have been a number of treaties between both the Florida and Oklahoma Seminoles. There was no treaty between the die-hard tribal members that ran off into the swamps because it was just too much trouble and expense to round them up - hence, the Seminole contention that they were unconquered. The fact remains that as a federally recognized tribe, i.e., “Indian Entities Recognized and Eligible to Receive Services from the United States Bureau of Indian Affairs”, they have clearly surrendered.

No, you are now being obtuse...

There have been a number of treaties between both the Florida...

No peace treaty. Find it if you can (don't waste your time).

...

Come on down to FL. We will take it up with the Osceola brothers that I know.

Whatever. Back to my original point, Red Cloud remains the only military leader whom the US government sued for peace.

These armies are fine, but victory really comes from better ideas. And from hashtags.

The Roman Army, despite some setbacks, really had no competitors of equal strength anywhere in its neighborhood.

Tell it to Crassus, Valerian, and Julian the Apostate.

The wastage rate in the Red Army was astronomical. They lost a million men taking Berlin

In their prime, though, the Roman Army was unequaled. I remember as a kid reading about Hannibal’s great campaigns. I thought he was the greatest general of ancient times. He may have been, but what impresses me now is how the Romans stayed the course after suffering the loss of several complete armies and crushed Hannibal and Carthage. Also, the campaign against the Jews was impressive. They were fighting a foe that fought to the last man, but the Romans ground them down. That’s how I think of the Roman Military Machine at its height - like a huge grinder that nothing could escape.
