Krakatoa was the largest volcanic explosion in recorded history (last 200 years or so).

No. It was the Mt Tambora eruption of 1815 (VEI of 7), killed 92,000 odd. The Krakatoa eruption of 1883 was 10X smaller (VEI of 6), killed 36,000 odd. See here: List of large volcanic eruptions of the 19th century
