he Kalashnikov AK-47 and its variants are the most widely used military rifles in the world. It has been put into service by more than 45 countries and seen action in every major military conflict since its creation in the late 1940s. While the overall design hasn’t changed significantly, many countries added their own unique tweaks to better fit their needs. In this article we will look at some of the most popular variants of the AK-47 and some of the lesser-known models as well. This guide can be used for identifying some of the less common models from around the world. We know you’d love to own the 20 AK-47 variants pictured here, but they’re owned by Kalashnikov Collectors Association member Stuart McDaniel.

20?!? Grab a regular wood stock, a side folder, an underfolder, and duplicate in AK-74, and I think you have it covered.

AK-47 may look cool, but they really are not that accurate compared to the M16 series of weapons. Not only are the grouping abilities not all that good, but many of the rifles show a tendency to walk as they heat up (that is the center of the group moves, not a constant zero).

Of course someone will come on and tell me that is not true, but in many years off competitive high power shooting, I have seen only a handful of AK variants show up at matches, and typically the performance is so poor they never return.

That is on modern NRA competitive targets, where the 10 ring is from 3.35 MOA @ 200 yards down to 2.0 MOA @ 600 yards, or scaled targets down to 100 yards.

I've been considering something like one of these as a car gun. Perfect for urban riot situations when the li'l old 9mm just isn't quite enough. I have a Concealed Handgun License, and these are legally considered to be handguns.

Got one of these - love it - have a laser sight on mine. My brother in law just got me a 75 round drum magazine - looks great on the pistol

That one uses the 5.45x39, right? I would check on ammo availability in your area before deciding.

Actual urban combat generally happens at shorter ranges than 100 yards.

Just me, never had an urge toown any AK variant. Only fired a full auto AK-74, never a 7.62mm AK-47.

Maybe being trained and ingrained with M-1 and M-14 rifles ruined it. Took a while to accept the AR series.

True, But lets be honest, the likelihood of someone actually using one of these rifles in an urban setting is pretty small.

The reality is as follows:

1) guys go out an buy cool looking gun.

2) Take to range and play with it.

3) Find out it really is not all that fun, ergonomic or accurate in 1 to 3 range sessions.

4) Back it goes out in the rack and is only taken out when someone wants to shoot cool looking gun or every 5 years when you forget why it never comes out of the rack.

Now if ever the time should come when you actually need to use a rifle,

Do you take the one you never really mastered?

or

the one you have mastered and have confidence in?

Of course it is all silly, as 99.9998 % of us will never have to use a personally owned rifle in self-defense. The only time that comes to mind in the last 30 years was the Rodney king riots, and in those the most use was waving it to scare off predators in search of easy prey, if any of the Korean Grocers had actually shot anyone at distance they would have been arrested. I guess in that mode the scariest looking rifle would be the best.

I was thinking I read that 17 people were killed in Chicago last weekend. At that rate how long before the Shiite gets real?

Not sure, but from the shape of the magazine it looks to me like a 7.62x39. This is just one example of the AK variant handguns, I've also seen them in 5.56 mm, I'd imagine it's also available in 5.45x39.

Probably never, it's Chicago. Chances are they are Negroes killed by Negroes, not Black Lives That Matter.

I remember reading our guys in Iraq were using AK’s to ‘rake’ the outside of their tanks when a jihadi attempted to jump on them.
