I am not computer savvy at all but I know that many freepers are....All of the sudden my laptop's internal speakers quit working. Did a systems restore. Trouble shooter found nothing wrong. Computer thinks the speakers are working but there is no sound. Zip. Nada. Is it time to purchase external speakers?
When you ask for guidance on FR, you must beware of idiots, such as the one who suggested the drop test or the one who told you to get under the covers and spray it. Forget what you heard, don’t download any drivers because you risk getting a virus or Trojan horse. Find a relative or somebody you trust that may be able to recommend someone locally who is tech savvy. It may be something very simple, don’t complicate things.
Go into hardware manager and delete the speakers, then restart computer.
The computer should begin a “New Hardware Found” and you can complete installation from there.
If it doesn’t do that, then use the add hardware to reinstall.
Hit f11 and see what happens .
It mutes the computer but might not show it
#40 is the best suggestion. You can buy cheap headphone for $10 or less. Ear phones are even cheaper.
It is possible that a piece of lint or something has worked its way into the headphone jack, causing this problem. Worth checking out.
It's a problem though when you're allergic to dust and don't want to take it outside (but that second part is just being lazy).
Worse when you buy a $135 video card, only to experience its software causing games to crash. Worse than that, when your hard drive starts to die and you have to go out (Microcenter is the best) to get a new HDD, AND a new optical drive because that somehow completely died.
If you are listening to music on a website or app, move that site’s volume control up and down an set it to “max”.
That will make sure it is not using an application mute.
youtube music is a good test. DVDs may present other problems.
Good suggestion, checking f mute button. People forget about that one.
Can you hear anything else? Conversation? Trains? :-)
Before your HD dies, do the following. Buy an SSD (solid-state drive). Clone your HD to the SSD, and install the SSD in place of your old HD. Now buy a RAID enclosure and two identical HD units. Boot off your new SSD, and place your non-system stuff on the RAID unit. Your machine will be a dozen times faster, will boot in a blink of an eye, and your data will be protected if an HD fails (the RAID will mirror data to both drives and keep running until you replace the failed HD).
If you're on a laptop, replace the optical drive with an SSD, and do as I previously mentioned, booting from the SSD while using a new HD as a second drive. You can attach an external optical drive as needed.
MY LAPTOP DOES MANY BAD AND GET LOCK UP-—
MY FIX IS REMOVE BAT AND WHAT I CALL A COLD START UP USING JUST A/C POWER
WORK FOR ME
YOU CAN REINSTALL BAT AFTER SOUND WORKS
GOOD LOCK
Thanks. I have not tried that. I like trying the free stuff first.
REMOVE BAT FROM LAPTOP AND BOOT UP ON A/C POWER -—THIS WORK FOR ME
GOOD L;UCK
and I run windows 7 ... computer is not very old but I like 7
My son just bought a new laptop with Win 10. I know you have Win 7 but....
Anyway, MS did an automatic update and his audio disappeared. We had no idea as to why until I told him to uninstall the audio drivers. When he rebooted his laptop it loaded the older, correct drivers that were actually from a different hardware company. It seems the Win 10 update installed drivers for another sound card.
If you did an update or had auto update turned on it installed the wrong drivers.
Might be a good time to either let a qualified computer tech look at it or maybe the 9 yo next door.
Just out of curiosity; is there a little red x on the speaker icon at the bottom right of your screen? If so; click on it one time to see if that solves it.
Logitech has great speakers, which I’ve used for many years.
Easy, quick to order and ship immediately.

I bought an SSD, and it boots pretty quick from POST to using it. Managed to get an enterprise-level WD 2TB HDD (great to have a long-time friend that works at Microcenter get you a discount on better stuff than you went in for). Not too interested in RAID to be honest. As far as an image goes, I still have the HDD that was failing. I ought to be able to connect it (while forcing the SSD boot) to get all my stuff off it on to the new HDD.
I don’t like it much but I’m learning as I go, how to deal with two drives.
No! If the internal speakers don't work it is very likely external speakers will not work.
Out of the many possible reasons the physical speakers are the least likely to be the problem.
