The sun is set to 'change form' as NASA says solar minimum is on the way

The sun is heading into a period known as solar minimum, during which activity at the surface will ‘change form.’
In this time, certain types of activity, such as sunspots and solar flares will drop – but, it’s also expected to bring the development of long-lived phenomena including coronal holes.

According to NASA, solar minimum could also enhance the effects of space weather, potentially disrupting communications and navigation systems, and even causing space junk to ‘hang around.’

The sun follows roughly an 11-year cycle.
While sunspots were relatively high back in 2014,
they’re now heading toward a low point expected in 2019-2020, according to NASA.

‘This is called solar minimum,’ said Dean Pesnell of NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, MD.

‘And it’s a regular part of the sunspot cycle.’

Solar Minimum

Part of an 11 yr. long cycle- may affect navigation and communications at its height.

Don’t know for sure if this is correct, but I was to understand that this is the reason that manned travel to Mars would be virtually impossible until well into the 2020’s.

Unless something can be developed that can ward off the onslaught of radiation, etc., but is light enough that the rocket can lift off and gain the proper speeds.

THE COLD SUN - John L Casey
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=miIEAOAOgyI

Mr John L Casey is one of America’s most successful climate change researchers and climate prediction experts. He is the leading advocate in the US for a national and international plan to prepare for the next climate change to one of a dangerous cold climate era. This new cold era is caused by a historic decline in the Sun’s energy output, what he calls a “solar hibernation.”
The ideas are encapsulated in Casey’s RC Theory of solar variability.

Mr. John L. Casey is the former White House space program adviser, consultant to NASA Headquarters, and space shuttle engineer. He is the President of Space and Science Research Center http://www.spaceandscience.net

He is the author of the internationally acclaimed climate science book, “Cold Sun” which describes the rationale for understanding why global warming has ended and the effects of the new cold climate era.

The most recent solar maximum only entailed about 100 sunspots. There have been cycles where the minimum count was not much less than the current maximum.

If the solar cycle does affect the weather, it appears that the current trend portends an extended cooling off period.

A minimum. Meaning, that immediately after it reaches that point, is starts to rise.

Want to bet that no one in the media refers to the rise in solar activity as the cause of a rise in temperature?

Radiation is always a threat, and higher radiation certainly doesn’t help. But a burst (solar storm) is the real fear regarding radiation, and that can happen any time.

The typical reason for the timing of unmanned missions (and probably for manned missions) is the alignment of the planets. Every few years the amount of fuel needed to reach Mars is at a minimum, so that’s the obvious time to launch. Otherwise you may not be able to get there, or certainly not carry very much.

The next Ice Age is coming. A shorter ‘Little Ice Age’ is possible, and eventually a regular, predictable Ice Age will come. During the last long term Ice Age New York was under a mile of ice. It is a natural occurrence, as regular as wind and snow. The Creepozoid Wacko Envirofascist National Socialists will no doubt blame climate change, Globull Gloaming, or aliens for the cold. Regular humans with adapt.

Us old CBer’s use to follow that 11 year cycle. High Sun Sports, talking skip all over with 5 Watts. Low sunspots meant a heck of allot less interference talking to fellow CBer’s miles away locally.

Interesting that nothing in the article discussions the connection with weather even though this is historical correlation and discussion point elsewhere.

We’ve learned that solar flares are what builds up the earth’s magnetosphere. Without them, the magnetosphere thins and thus weakens.

And when the sun DOES become more active, it starts hitting the planet with flares again. Normally (And this will continue to be “normal”) the magnetosphere builds up faster than the solar flares can break it down.

Today we are so invested in technology and telecom that our world literally runs on it. But that telecom infrastructure (Globally, really) isn’t shielded too well and isn’t capable of taking solar radiation. So since the last peak of solar activity (just a few years ago when we were getting scary X class flaring) what we are worried about are the latest developments not being able to handle it.

Not really worried, mind you - but the new systems remain untested .

Oh noes, global cooling again. All the chicken Littles will now have to run in counter clockwise circles, clockwise is definitely out. Perhaps the politicians can spend all that carbon tax credit money they collected to buy some Co2 to save the planet again.

I think I will just buy a jacket.
