The old classic Michael Grant work, “Cities of Vesuvius” is among those worth reading. Lots of coffeetable books on Pompeii and whatnot are bound to be available at used bookstores.

My grandfather was from Florence. Studied at the Vatican to become a priest. Some kind of “problem” with some nuns & he was “evicted”. This was back in the late 1800’s
But, on a field trip to Pompeii, the whole assemblage was horrified and red faced when they came upon the graffiti upon the walls. They were all well versed in the Latinate of the day...

Not so much. The super heated, choking air, with pumice, silica dust would have made for an agonizing and slow suffocating death. It was a hellish and horrible way to go.
That happened in Pompeii, in Herculaneum, the heat from the pyroclastic flow, vaporized many of the victims instantly.
