This has always been my favorite NYC skyscraper.

When the building opened in 1930, there was an observation deck called “Celestial” on the 71st floor. It was closed to the public in 1945 and is currently occupied by a private firm. However, you can take a look at a few images of the observatory by clicking the link above. Until the late ‘70’s there was also The Cloud Club, a private club occupying the 66th through 68th floors.
Today, unfortunately, there is no official way for tourists to visit anything beyond the lobby, though, we are keeping our fingers crossed that this will change.
It would be great if the new owners made these accessible to the public at some point.
At night from the north end of the NJ turnpike many people not familiar with the NYC skyline mistake it for the Empire State building.
Chrysler bldg, does it come with a government bailout?
I work a block away from it. I walk outside to go to Grand Central rather than use the tunnel just so I can look at it on the way home. Speaking of Grand Central, the main lobby there is another beautiful slice of Manhattan.
My Mom was going out with a young man who worked for Chrysler and got a trip to the 57th floor to see his office.
Same here. I own one of the 300 32 page booklets issued to the celebrities invited to the Gala Dedication Ceremony of the Chrysler Building May 26,1930, the day before it was opened to the public. It’s still in mint condition. It has a black felt/velveteen cover with a beautiful embossed silver image of the Chrysler Building on the cover.
It’s contents are a brief history of the building’s conception, design, construction, and selected black and white photographs of specific Art Deco design elements.
The presentation booklet is personalized to the celebrity it was presented to on arrival at the Gala. . . I don’t recall the name on mine except my research showed me he was a New York newspaper publisher that no one would recognize today, including the newspaper.
I bought my booklet at an ephemera document auction three years ago or so. I have it on display with a Department 56 lighted scale model of the Chrysler Building in a glass case with some other Chrysler Building memorabilia in our entry way.
Several years ago, a survey of architects asking them to list their ten favorite buildings in the world in order of preference, the Chrysler Building was the hands-down-winner with it being listed as the number one favorite on 90% of the responses.
Surprisingly, the ceiling mural of the night sky is far from accurate.

I think the Chrysler building is the best looking in the country. Followed by the Flatiron building.
Nothing like Art Deco.
It’s okay, but I prefer Art Nouveau.
