Vitamin D supplementation may slow the progression of type 2 diabetes in newly diagnosed patients and those with prediabetes. The study findings suggest that high-dose supplementation of vitamin D can improve glucose metabolism to help prevent the development and progression of diabetes.
Although low vitamin D levels have previously been associated with an increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes, some studies have reported no improvement in metabolic function. However, these often had a low number of participants or included individuals with normal vitamin D levels at the start who were metabolically healthy, or who had long-standing type 2 diabetes. Whether vitamin D supplementation has any beneficial effect in patients with prediabetes or with newly diagnosed diabetes, especially in those who have low vitamin D levels, remains uncertain.
This study examined the effect of vitamin D supplementation on glucose metabolism in patients newly diagnosed with type 2 diabetes or identified as at high risk of developing the condition. Markers of insulin function and glucose metabolism were measured before and after six months of high-dose vitamin D supplementation (approximately 5-10 times the recommended dose). Although only 46% of study participants were determined to have low vitamin D levels at the start of the study, supplementation with vitamin D significantly improved the action of insulin in muscle tissue of participants after six months.
Dr. Claudia Gagnon says, "The reason we saw improvements in glucose metabolism following vitamin D supplementation in those at high risk of diabetes, or with newly diagnosed diabetes, while other studies failed to demonstrate an effect in people with long-standing type 2 diabetes is unclear. This could be due to the fact that improvements in metabolic function are harder to detect in those with longer-term disease or that a longer treatment time is needed to see the benefits."

Stupid American Center Aisle (in the Box) Diet
Ask Me How I Know!
Yup. Insulin resistance is killing everybody. Tweaking a vitamin here or there ain’t gonna do it. Losing the excess 57 pounds of body fat, well now that will.
Keeping our carbs lower is also something we do. We do eat peaches, blueberries, and watermelon, as examples of lower glycemic carbs we do eat.
Endocrinologist M.D.s have been prescribing up to 50,000 IU of V.D (Cholecalciferol) to diabetic patients since the early 1990s. They were far ahead of the curve.
John Prendergast, M.D., of Palo Alto (now retired) had such great success in halting and reversing diabetic symptoms that he virtually stopped recommending patients for surgeries (which brought him accusations of betrayal from one of the three surgeons to whom he had previously sent patients!).
As a nutritionist, I met several people who were pleased with his treatments, and I attended one of his lectures, and spoke with him afterwards.
Dr. Prendergast had been so successful that he had long been a physician to Hollywood celebrities and English royalty. I was told by one of his patients that he received at least one award for having the highest success rate in treating Diabetes in the entire USA (97% recovery rate, as I recall).
He got into the specialty because his father and other male relations had died very young from cardiovascular disease, and his own health was declining dangerously by the time he reached his 30’s. He was his own patient.
The general protocol he described to me was to cycle people between 10,000 and 50,000. The main proviso was to avoid any calcium supplementation above 40,000, as it might promote hypercalcemia.
I used to sell 10,000 IU and 50,000 IU V.D supplements. I kept the 50,000 hidden, so that people would not mistake it for 5,000, and so that I could make clear what certain M.D.s like Dr. Prendergast recommended.
(NB: I am not a doctor, and I did not make prescription. The above is my recollections from various conversations and readings from years ago.)
P.S.
As of 2017, when I left the field, 50,000 IU V.D did not require a doctor’s prescription. I myself sold many bottles of 50K to many people for many years.
I did not leave it out on the shelf, and I informed such customers of the recommendations, but it was entirely legal to sell such supplements to the general public.
I was legally allowed to disseminate nutritional information, as long as I did not make prescription.
I worked in the natural foods nutrition industry, specializing in supplementation, for about 25 years.

I’m at 45lbs GONE (8 Months not eating Sugar, Carbs and Veg Oils)... Off all BP MEDS, My Fasting Glucose is normally <85 and I Try to stay under 20 Carbs per day (Keto)
I don’t know if I am Keto but I damn sure am Low Carb < 50 Carbs easy and it Works!
I normally eat 1 meal per day but sometimes I eat a snack (I count it as a meal) of Liverwurst and Hard Cheese. I let my body tell me if I eat 1 or 2 meals.
Yesterday I wanted something “Crunchy” Bacon it is!
Linoleic Acid [Omega-6 EFA] is the major EFA, but Americans in particular are far overconsuming it, especially in rancidified form.
I do recommend Hemp Nut [Achene] and Hemp Oil to people. Along with Black Currant Oil, it is virtually unique in being a balanced source of both EFA’s and in the first derivatives of both EFA’s: Gamma-Linolenic Acid [GLA/w6] and Stearidonic Acid [SDA/w3].
As such, it is to some extent a vegetarian alternative to fish oils.
Hemp Nut is also a rich source of high-quality protein, more nutritious and digestible than Soy.
High doses of Vitamin D3 also helps slow the growth of advanced prostate cancer. I have metastatic prostate cancer and take 10,000 iu twice per day. Five year survival rate is about 50%. It will be five years for me in two month. I also take several other supplements. I figure anything that wont hurt me is worth taking.
Not claiming that is why I have responded to treatment extraordinarily well, every case is different, but my oncologist told me only a few patients have done as well as Im doing.
Taking 10,000 iu of D3 may very well help prevent prostate cancer.
Well, congrats
But dam-son. Liverwurst! Gag me!
I finally convinced my elderly mother to take vitamin D3, only after one of her friends started taking it. I’ll keep a copy of this for her.
OK
Knock wood for you!
You brought back the memory of the 1st way I made any $$. Battling wasps to harvest currants. It was touch and go, but I didn’t get stung.
OK Brunswager (sp) ;^)
I just like getting as much Liver?heart etc in my Diet as possible ... I Love My Steak but ya need more.
PS (Smoked Liverwurst is AWESOME)
My endocrinologist prescribed Vitamin D, 50,000 IU, once a week. I was diagnosed with Type II diabetes about 20 years ago, and still take oral medication, and watch my food intake. My A1C has been within normal range for quite a long time now. I also have hypothyroidism, and hyperparathyroidism, which causes my body to produce higher levels of calcium. Other than taking the parathyroid out, there isn’t much that can be done about it. And so far, my doctor hasn’t recommended that. I go for fasting blood work every 6 months.
Please look into Vitamin K2 to shuttle your blood calcium into your bones.
It happens pretty quickly, once on it. A mouse study showed a 50 percent reversal of calcium plaques in half the time it took to get the calcium to cover the plaques, once starting K2.
I used to eat liverwurst sandwiches when I was a kid. I must not have had taste buds back then. I won't touch the stuff now. My oldest son also ate liverwurst sandwiches when he was little too, but like me, he wouldn't touch it with a 10 foot pole now. He's a very picky eater still, even in his 50's.
